Wait to be let go, or beat them to it?

So here is my deal. My uni will cut one teacher this year. They told myself and five other teachers (lowest seniority) that we'd be on the chopping block. So I have a 1/6 chance to stay. However, I have no plan to stay.

So, how should I approach this? I'm not that good at office politics, and in the end I want this to work out as much in my favor as I can. What's the best course of action for me to be sure to land in the best new position I can?

Just ask your boss if you can negotiate a good departure (e.g. a good recommendation or help in finding another position) if you volunteer to be the one that leaves. Stress that you're doing it to avoid pressure on all six of you. You're being a team player. yada yada yada

I thought 'yada yada' was Yiddish. Billy Crystal says that often.

Are they cutting five teachers, or are they cutting one teacher? Because if they're only cutting one teacher as you wrote, then your chances of staying are 5/6, not 1/6.

My mistake, that should read "will keep one teacher" not will cut.

Either way, I don't plan on staying. How should I approach it with my boss?

Find another job, but don't include your current school name on the resume, because they'll call them up.

Why not include them? He's not being fired because of bad behavior. He's being let go (along with 4 other teacher) because of budget cuts.
