I went to university in Montreal in the 90s (awesome city to go to university in) and I remember going to an Expos game at the Big O with my buddies. Montreal is definitely a hockey city, and so there were only about 5,000 people there even though it holds 50-60,000 I think.
Anyways, I've seen several Koreans wearing Montreal caps and it seems kind of strange to see them again as I know they moved to DC about 7 or 8 years ago. Any one else noticed them here and have any idea why people wear them? It just seems kind of strange to me as I never even see people in Vancouver wearing them, so I'm curious why any Koreans would be wearing them.

I've noticed this as well. I mentioned it once at the walkerhill, and someone said it was a for a local team, though I'm pretty sure that they were either messing with me or simply had no idea what they were talking about. At any rate there are several students in my school that wear the hats and I asked them what team it was and they had no idea; they just liked the look of the logo.

I've seen people with them in the USA. It's a dead team, but there's still a certain popularity I guess?

If you see someone with a Major League Baseball hat on in Korea, I'd say that 99% of the time it's for fashion.

I'm a Cubs fan and for a while, everytime I saw someone wearing their hat I'd yell, "GO CUBS". Not one person knew what the hell I was talking about. Perhaps if it's an Indians' hat they know what team it is (since Choo, a Korean, is on the team).

It has caught on as some sort of fashion statement and/or a result of shameless MLB marketing.

Expos gear is very trendy now. They were probably the coolest team ever in the majors.Playing up in Montreal in that huge concrete spaceship with a handful of fans most games in a stadium that seated over 50,000.

The league hated them and spent years hoping they'd go away.

They got no respect from the league or from anyone in general but still pumped out some of the best players of their day.

In 1994,they were the best team in the league and were a favourite to win the world series, but the strike started up and no one really cared as the Expos were first overall and missing the rest of the season was a good thing in that case.

Long live the Expos!

Once I asked a Korean on the subway about his cap because I thought it was from the Expos but wasn't totally sure about it. Anyway, the guy knew it was a baseball team but not which one.

My guess is that companies making those caps don't have to pay anything to anyone since the Expos don't exist anymore. I know, I know, you can buy so much fake/cuonterfeit stuff already in Korea so why would they bother with that? I have no idea; I'm just trying to figure out a reason why the Expos seem so popular.

The Expos relocated and became the Washington Nationals, so I bet somebody, if only MLB itself, owns the rights.

I saw a college aged Korean girl wearing a Vancouver Grizzlies hoody just before I left Korea in June. I'm sure she was their biggest fan back when they closed up shop while she was in middle school and they didn't broadcast their games here.

I think the Doosan Bears, or some other Korean team, had a similar logo. It probably contributed to the popularity of the Expo hats.

Nats own the rights, just as the Rangers retain the Senators' name (and thus why we have the Nats and not the Sens). Everything at the MLB shops is legit.
