Yeah, I understand the thing about pensions now.
We asked if we could share our accommodations. We are all members of the same band so we wanted to live together because it would make many things easier. But I didn't count on one of them being a total slob, so it's a little more trouble than it's worth. Still, in the end we are all paying less than we would otherwise and we have plenty of space. But now the location sucks. Me and my first roommate picked this place because it was going to be close to where both of us were to be working. When I went home for a visit before starting the job, they informed me that the contract I signed was void because the school I was to work at changed their mind in the span of a few days, so I was basically left with no job. The only job they could offer me was one that's 45-60 minutes away. The plus side was that the pay was a little more due to extra classes, but the downside was that it's in a very rich area where there are a lot of spoiled little brats. Quitting won't affect my living situation because the house is being rented under my roommates name. I'll just have to pay rent out of pocket. |

If you aren't getting accommodation included (or housing allowance) then you're being ripped off (again).
Did you go to the labor board? |

I am getting a housing allowance. Though they still haven't payed my landlord my share of the key money.
I didn't go to the labor board yet. I can't find the part where it talks about health insurance and pension standards on the Ministry of Employment's website (where it would prove whether or not they are breaking the law). I don't want to make a complaint without knowing exactly what I'm complaining about.
Also, I was thinking that maybe I could tell them that I will file a complain unless they give me a letter of release from my contract so that I can get a new, better job. It seems like a gamble, but again, I can't really do that without being able to show them the law they're breaking. Do you know exactly where I can read about the health insurance and pension standards? |

If you go to the labor board, you can ask them about the law. Or call the Seoul Global Center for legal details.

Thanks for the help! I may have found a replacement job, also after-school, but full benefits and better housing allowance. I'm hoping that I can get them to release my contract so I can transfer my visa. I'm wonder, though, if I should ask them to release my contract and tell them I'll report them if I don't, or if I should report them, then resign and ask them. Either way seems like a gamble, but I think they would be more willing to do it if I don't report them. |

If the guys at the labor board feel that you've been unfairly treated, they too can release you from the contract so that you can transfer.
Ask the labor board first what they think of your situation. If they can't help you then go to the boss and ask for the letter. If they DO side with you then just report the jerk and be done with him. |
