Sherman Hemsley, known to many for his starring role on The Jeffersons has died at 74, according to TMZ.com in his El Paso, Texas home.
"Sherman Hemsley has been pronounced dead El Paso Sheriff's Department has confirmed," the actor's agent Todd Frank said in a statement.

He was nothing short of great as George Jefferson, the insult-spewing, honky-hating, up-from-the-ghetto, nouveau-riche dry-cleaner living in "a deluxe apartment in the sky".
This clip isn't exactly highbrow, sort of like a stand-up comedy routine. But it's a good showcase of Hemsley's work. The show actually got a lot more socially relevant.

Sorry. That wasn't the clip I meant to include, it's not even from The Jeffersons. This is the one I wanted to post.
But the first one is actually better, overall. |

His first career was as a lawyer. He became an actor because friends thought his over the top personality would make him a success as an actor. They were correct. |
