Maneuverability is paramount in a fight. One in armor does not have it. They tire faster. Thrusting is the most effective attack with a spear, so limited. And all armor has weaknesses. So a faster equally skilled swordsman will be faster, won't tire, more effective attacks slashes, stabs, and still has ample protection from anything other than a thrust.

I think you're assuming the swordman will automatically be able to defeat the spear's reach. I don't think it's a win for the swordman everytime . And slashing attacks from a sword are useless against armor. |

| If a Light Saber is not within the OP's remit then I'd have to say longbow. If also that is inadmissible then I'd go for a War Hammer; ability to pierce armour, crush skulls, break a horse's leg (sorry!) and use as a center pole in a tent. |

Heck who needs a weapon. If its a person coming after you, rig a pit or some razor wire. Just remember to step carefully and keep your head low.
At the complete opposite end of the spectrum you could go with a flamethrower. That should in theory, qualify for the purposes of this discussion as flammable oils as weapons goes back for several centuries. Combine that with the fact that you aren't getting shot at and you could be a lumbering, armored, terrifying hulk.
Lastly, a horse may be the best weapon. Unless you have a bow, I can ride circles around you and pelt you with rocks I pick up from the ground.. |

I'll admit not every time. But the majority would be won by a swordsman. Armor has slashing points. But I'm talking about a European Long Sword vs a Halberd or the like. |
