He said that within the next 5 to 7 years, a prominent South Korean person will openly say that reunification is NOT necessary . That the South doesn't want, need, or stand to gain any benefit from it. At the moment this is far too taboo to say, but I'm pretty sure that this sentiment is in the mind of many, many South Koreans. |
Taboo for anyone of real prominence to openly declare, perhaps, but I've heard plenty of Koreans casually express just such sentiments, and frankly, they are right. |

Back in 2001, many of my adult students were openly opposed to re-unification. They talked about the problems Germany faced
and how East Germany was an economic drag on the West.
They also talked about how many North Koreans lack any technical
skills or education and what a huge sinkhole this would be for the South
if re-unification were to occur. |

That is the moment that reunification will occur, on SK's terms. I've said it for years. The Chinese won't like it and may (probably will) move to stop it, but when SK decides it doesn't need the north, NK will lose its reason to exist and will collapse because it has nothing to bargain with. |
I think you're forgetting about nukes and a huge army. NK would still have bargaining power in that scenario... |

Those are glass half-full types. I see a potential market. |

Or access to a large cheap labor market just next door, that speaks the same language. Hyundai Construction is just salivating at potential international contracts to build up the North.
But if unification happens, it has to be done right, basically restricting North Korean from leaving and restricting foreigners, including South Koreans, from buying property at cheap prices that would leave the owner with nowhere enough money to buy a home outside of the North. |

Agreed. There needs to be a travel restriction period and a ban on land purchases for at least a few years if reunification happens. Other than that, NK already has a solid infrastructure in place in cities; everything else will fall into place with development. With SK's advancements in technology, the flooding/erosion/drought combination that's been occurring over the past twenty years or so could potentially be reversed. |

Beer is $0.60 a pint, there is an untapped EFL market and the women would be impressed if you offered them a TOOTSIE ROLL.
Bring on the unificationing, I say. |

| Why do I have the impression that the women there would look like a mix of ajummas plus Soviet (not Russian) women? Not exactly the most appealing. |

If the game plan is to pick up women with Tootsie Rolls, I think JustinC will take what he can get.
I know they were probably hand-picked for their looks, but these girls are worth at least a Snickers bar. |

But you don't have to have unification for that, just obliterate the elite |

North Korea in HD?
Communist states just don't look right without a sepia-toned state-TV hue to them. |
