Some Korean employers will balk at hiring Koreans who moved or were raised abroad. This usually has to do with an old habit of wanting t westerner for the camp or hakwon for image purposes. Some of these employers think the westerner will be better for the promotion of their school or camp as he or she will attract more parents who wish to place their kids in an English program.

At the end of the day for the employer it is more an issue of greed than racism because if they felt marketing a Korean-American would get them more revenue the turn around would be damn fast.

Exactly. Westerners are hired by camps for the same reason that attractive, busty women are hired by bars. They attract costumers.

just like non-koreans, good looking gyopos get way better treatment than ugly ones. in fact it's like nite and day for attractive vs. unattractive korean f-4 holders.

It is a problem if the first question they ask is "what is your visa?" and then they say "sorry we don't hire F-4s" eventhough my resume and cover letter clearly shows my extensive summer camp, winter camp and total towork experiences.

so how exactly are you being discriminated against when you just stated you have worked camps before?

so what if that particular one won't hire F-4s; a lot of places don't want to hire E-2s or whatever.

just move on already.

ha ha good one. Look there are huge advantages to having a F4. Id rather have an F4 over an E2 any day. Sure the Whiteys have the advantage over us in terms of teaching jobs. But I dont really care because I hate teaching Esl and will never work in the industry again. Also as someone mentioned its strictly about money and image to the hagwon owners and it shows how f***ed up korea can be. Finally things are alot better for gyops now than they were 10~15 years ago. Back then it was so much harder for gyops to teach. But it comes down to this; dont teach esl as a career. Dont rely on a profession that is looked down upon. I would confidently say that all esl teachers regardless of race are looked down upon. Make more of yourself and see teaching esl for what it really is. Dont make it your life.

Yeah - I think it really helps that I'm not an ESL teacher and I'm a dual national (US and Korea) going into the military voluntarily. I've not had any problems with anyone and people have been insanely nice and helpful.
