Here is one of the news articles discussing what happened. I understand that some people say she was being unsportsmanlike by crying. But regardless of that, this malfunction in the clock seems to be real. I am curious what other people's take is on this.

Yes she was shortchanged on account of the clock malfunction.

She also lost everyone's respect by her conduct and therefore her protest/request wasn't considered very seriously.

In other words, didn't display the character worthy of a true Olympian, which reflects on how young people today are raised in Korea (you'd figure this side of the equation would be covered by Korea's Olympic committee/training staff, who are looked after by the Korean government...oh, nevermind...)

In the men's team competition, Japan put in a protest in a more low-key manner and were awarded a medal.

Was that for fencing, or another sport?

It's because appeals aren't determined by the IOC but by the individual sport's organization. Like I've said before, these Olympics really show what organizations have their act together and which ones don't.

A Japanese boxer also put in an appeal and was rewarded...don't think he sat down in the middle of the ring for an hour after the bout

In her case she had to sit on the Piste because if she left that meant that she would have accepted the original decision. She had to wait out the appeal. She should've kept fighting till the end the German did (regardless of time) and therefore was declared the winner. No rule on this one.. the Korean netizens have gone and posted the personal information of either the Judge or the German lady online..

Eventually, the technical director sided with the German fencer and the ruling was confirmed

This kind of unfair crying victim incident is sooooo familiar and strangely predictable.

So what was the nationality of the technical director? Have they burned down his country's embassy yet?

Have millions of netizens crashed servers with death threats already?

Any mass protests in seoul yet?

Have they made a pop song about the incident yet?
