|
|
I want to get an international drivers permit for a trip to Taiwan (thinking of renting a scooter and from what I've read it seems more likely to happen with an IDP). I've seen threads about this before but they seem to dealing with people who don't have a Korean drivers licence.
I have a Korean drivers licence, and don't want to go to the trouble and expense of getting one from my Australian licence back home. Seems easier to do it here if it's possible.
Anyone know how? |

Easy, go to the local driver licensing department and ask for one. Costs about 10,000 won I think, or was it 30,000. I can't remember.
Called a (sorry don't have Han-geul on this computer at the moment) Guk Jae Un Jeon Myeong Heo Jeung.
As with everything in Korea, you need cash, photos and all the proper ID (passport, Korean license and Korean ID). Can't remember if they actually looked at all my ID but as a Waeg it happens sometimes. |

Korean drives licenses are good in Taiwan. You don't need an IDP with it. |

Awesome! Good to know. For 10,000 won, I may as well get the IDP "just in case". |

Unless they went up in price recently they are 7000 won.
You also need your Korean D/L, ARC, passport, a passport type photo and the application form (available at the desk).
They take about 30 minutes to process.

Helpful as always, ttompatz. Thanks for the info about the passport. That would've tripped me up. |

I just wanted to update this as I went and did it today.
To clarify, this is to get an international driving permit if you already have a Korean driver's licence.
I went to the Gangnam branch. You have to go to the desk to the right of the door and get an application form from the them. It's all in Korean, but not too hard to work out with a bit of Korean knowledge and Google translate on your phone. I'm sure if you were stuck someone would help you.
Then take it to the desk and give the lady your application form, Korean drivers licence and passport. I didn't need my ARC, but who knows what tomorrow's lady would ask for. It still costs 7,000 won, and once my application form was filled out it took all of 5 minutes (though it wasn't busy there today and I didn't have to wait).
This is about one fifth the price it costs in Australia (Victoria at least), so I'm pretty stoked. I may not need it on my vacation, but for 7,000 won it's worth having just in case. |
