My boyfriend recently came to visit me in July for a few weeks. He was going to leave today, but I contracted malaria last week and he changed his tickets so he could stay longer and take care of me. I'm mostly better. He now has an open ticket. Because his work at home is flexible and on a per-contract basis, he has the freedom to stay here for a few more weeks, even a few months, so we're thinking--why not? We would like to make that work, but he wants to earn a bit more money to sustain him in this case.

I thought the most logical option to earn some extra cash would be through tutoring. English is his first language, so he is a native speaker, but he actually is FROM India and does have an accent. Knowing Koreans, I wonder what they will think of his non-white-ness + the accent. Do you think it's still possible to get tutoring work? Any advice would be appreciated. Anyone have any thoughts or know some other creative ways he could get any other temp work in Korea? He works in film production at home, but I have heard it's hard to get PAID work doing that here...but that's probably worth a shot too.

Realistically he has no shot doing anything. Just put it out of your mind and don't think about it again. Enjoy your youth.

Well, he can't get a job here teaching/tutoring English legally. He can't speak Korean (I assume?) so won't be working in film production.

He is really limited in what he could do here for work.

dino was harsh but in general terms he was right.

Your Indian BF cannot likely get anyother visa than a F3 (dependent visa, through you) on which he cannot work.

Unless he has specific qualifications and can line up an employer who will sponsor him, he cannot legally work in Korea. This is not being negative, it is simply the reality.

Perhaps if he enrolls in a University program he can tutor part time (cap on earnings and hours).

If your bf tutors, he will do so illegally and if busted he will get fined and deported. Also, turtoring for a "few weeks" will not get him many students as parents typically prefer to hire tutors for a bit longer.

He could not work in film production as he has no work visa (that seems to keep coming up) unless he works on that with an employer from where you are from and gets paid there. That way the income is not earned in Korea.

And that cannot be gotten unless you marry him. Boyfriend is not a legal familial relationship here.

There is legal and helpful advice. There is NO legal option for him other than to stay under his current status of sojourn and leave before his visa expires.

IF you want to live and work together then to go India, China, Thailand or Cambodia where you can both do it legally (assuming he holds a valid degree).

If he has tangible skills, he could get hired at an international firm like Samsung. Plenty of foreigners at Samsung. As far as I can tell, that is his best legal option.

No, he still needs a visa to work at Samsung. He needs a visa to work anywhere, even a soup kitchen. The foreigners who work at Samsung are usually F4, F5, F6. I should know.

No problem, Patrick. Perhaps the mods/admins here should make a sticky: "YOUR BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND/BFF IS NOT YOUR RELATIVE!" and see what happens.

Thank you ttompatz. Just because it wasn't the answer the OP wanted to hear doesn't mean it wasn't helpful.

***@vicious Thanks for the contribution. It's just that the comments I found helpful were accompanied with a little more of an explanation than NO YOU CAN'T. Otherwise, you come off as spouting useless negativity, and most of us probably know that this board has a bit of a reputation for that...

Anyhow, thanks y'all, it was helpful. @Troglodyte, you DID post a response...strange that it disappeared...I found it the most helpful by far. Good call on making a resume with a fake name and approaching hagwons for work for a month. I think that's by far the best suggestion. I think we will probably see about that and if it doesn't feel promising after trying that for a while, then *shrugs* c'est la vie. Thanks!!

Well I think it's pretty easy to see why his post was removed. He recommended that you lie, break the law, deceive a hagwon into hiring you, all to make a measly 2 grand. Good one. Honestly, if you are willing to listen to advice like that you deserve what's coming to you.

Seriously? This is the advice you want to follow?? Lie, falsify documents and get work illegally...

Well best keep a packed suitcase nearby when the crap hits the fan and your bf gets deported and fined.

Good lord.
