I've got an in person interview next week for a job with Gangnam public schools to begin September 1st. They do not provide housing nor key money but they do provide a housing allowance of 900 000 won per month.

I'm going to either have to pay key money (which I have 5 000 000 won for) or extra rent each month if I don't want to put down the key money.

I don't mind a bit of a commute to work but I wonder if anyone else working for Gangnam public schools has any personal experiences on how this goes for you.

As an aside.....I am extremely nervous about the interview. I mean this is a public school job in Gangnam were talking, I bet that they interview at least 5 people for each position.

Every other interview I have had in Korea has been a rubber stamp but this one will be very serious and competitive. I bet there are more people reading this post who have been shot down by Gangnam public schools than there are who have been hired by Gangnam public schools.

I don't know what the actual job would be like, but 900K can go a long way (even in Seoul). Itaewon/HBC/Kyungridan are just a 15=20~ minute bus ride away. With 900K/5mil, you could find a really nice 2-3 bedroom.

I'm not saying anything. I think you should take the job. This will be a good life lesson for you.

I got offered a job with them but turned it down. Although the pay was very good, the hours were kind of high for a public school, vacation was cut back recently, and teaching elementary school in gangnam sounded potentially very stressful, esp. if you didn't jive well with your co-teacher..

The housing allowance is nice until you realize that it results in higher taxes. Overall I saved the same amount of money at my SMOE job as my Gangnam job. The extra hours suck, the students (IMO) are easier to teach, and the commute from the Itaewon/HBC area can be longer than you think.

If saving money is your priority and you don't mind the commute (as you mentioned) you should probably find a place in the Itaewon area. If you don't mind a roommate, that'll save you tons of dough and you'll be sittin' pretty.
