| Why not worry about something else!!! Not really sure if Koreans committ thought crime. But you should worry about something more important such as whether worrying about whether someacts by some groups are racist isnt a form of racism in itsself. |

I also see it as ignorant to shout out 외국인! when you see someone who is different.

Of course your experiences and concerns are valid. I've never questioned that and I actually respect you as one of the more mature, reasonable posters on this board. I think I acknowledged your situation as a father with children growing up here, and I do sympathise with a lot of the nonsense that you must have have to put up with.
Yes, it is ignorant to yell out at the top of one's voice, "외국인!!" when seeing a foreigner/someone who appears to be a foreigner on the street. In such a situation, one can either acknowledge the yeller and try to correct them (in a variety of ways), or one can ignore them. At the end of the day, these are the choices.
Honestly, I've experienced the yelling a handful of times in the time I've been here. I've heard myself be referred to as a foreigner many times when passing by people outside. But as I said before, and I guess the main point of my previous post was, this is not racism to me. |

Ok, thanks for letting me know where ya stand, Tiger.
I think sometimes it's matter of luck... and maybe 'karma' (hate to use that). Some people get their apts broken into, punched by drunks, and shouted at daily. Others... nothing.
I'm lucky in that for the most part, I've avoided violence and drunks here. Perhaps unlucky though in that I get the calls(!!) more than others.
Such is life.

That's because his intent is to make a mountain out of a mole hill. He's not really that "curious" about how the Korean language works. He wants to show that he's found yet another example of Korean racism and will continue to belabor the point regardless of how many people tell him he is wrong. |
There are plenty of examples of racial language used by the Korean media. This just isn't one of them. I'm not even sure I believe rchristo saw what he saw. I looked it the phrase in case someone on the internet caught a picture of video of it but found nothing. I looked it up on the SBS site and found an entry referring to Douglas as the "검은 요정" (Black elf or fairy) which is kind of amusing maybe offensive to some. Perhaps rchristo saw that and missed the "elf" because the phrase makes no sense otherwise.

I'm ethnically Korean, so I've never had "외국인!" shouted at me out of the blue, but when I was working at Hyundai, I was introduced at one of the departments by someone who told the workers to talk to me and ask me questions about how life was in the US. He added at the end: "이사람 껍질 보면은 한국인인데 안에는 외국인이다". That roughly translates to: "This person may look like a Korean on the outside, but he's a foreigner on the inside."
This wasn't meant to be insulting or to create some sort of hostility towards me. This was used to explain that I have a different way to thinking about things than those born in Korea and that they should talk to me about anything that they were interested in about life in the US. I've actually been called a 외국인 a number of times. |

Isn't it the use of the word, rather than the word itself? I would be annoyed if everyone kept on calling me an American when I'm not, but the word "American" has no negative meaning.
I have no problem with the term itself. |

For sure. The word itself is.. well, just 'foreigner'. And in many contexts, it's very accurate and apt.
My objection to it, such as it is, is when it's used in situations where A) it's not needed, and B) it's incorrect. |

A lot of Korean girls call black people "blackies".
One girl was discussing a job with our director in the states, she said to him "I heard there are a lot of blackies in the office". Haha, too fun! |
