I am nervous because I have never been out of the US before. I will be receiving my contract to teach in Ansan City with Englishtown starting July.
Only, my living space is on an island 20 minutes from Ansan. It is called Jaebu-do. The development is Apartmentown. If you live there, please tell me of your experiences. If you have heard of it, please tell what you know.

Anyongikahseiyo,

I've been to Jebudo several times with my Korean husband for fishing, eating or buying seafood... Nothing much else there I'm afraid. It's a really tiny island, with some restaurants and motels.
The road to the island is covered with water during high tide, making it impossible to get on/off the island during those times...

I can't understand why they would make you live there?!?! Are you 100% sure? I haven't noticed any apartment buildings there either, just some motels.

The following websites are in Korean, but just have a look, there are some pictures of the island.

Don't get the above poster wrong. It is quite a beautiful small little island. Many Ansan-ites frequent the island on the weekend.

The sea wall which also holds the main highway is excellent for rollerblading and biking. The drive to the island is very scenic.

Daebu-do isn't as built up but you can always take a 20 min bus ride to downtown Ansan.

When you cross the sea wall to get to Ansan, you'll be a short taxi ride to Oido Station, Line 4 on the Seoul subway. Subway from Oido to downtown Seoul takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

There's good and bad things about every city in Korea. Take it for what it's worth.

If you get there, and aren't happy, then just find another contract.

I agree that it is, but I also think it is pretty weird why they would make someone live there. Last time I was there (a couple fo months ago), I didn't see any apartment complexes... just motels and restaurants. I thought the only people living there would be the owners of those places and fishermen?

Apartment buildings are constructed incredibly fast in Korea, a couple of months from beginning to end, faster if it's only a few floors. And if it's called "Apartment town" then it's probably one of those "bali-bali" complexes put up tout suite.

As someone who lives on a Korean island (albeit large), and loves the laid-back seaside lifestyle, I'd say your situation isn't bad. As long as you don't have to work split shifts, given your commute.

Good luck and make the best of it.

A Korean student told me it was jaebu-do. Actually it is Jungwang-dong or Siheung-si. I put up a new strand asking about these places. If any of you know about them, please share.

Thanks for your responses,

There's a town in Kyonggi called Jebu-do. Somewhere around Suwon and Ansan. A little too rural for my taste.

We were all confusing that with Daebu-do, an island near Ansan in the West Sea.

I could have sworn that jebu-do (or whatever spelling) was the island that only and island for part of the day. I've been there 3 times and am pretty sure that the name.

There is a Jaebu-do and a Daebu-do; both are right next to each other. I think that the other posters got it right when they said that it's a small place with not a whole lot going on aside from a string of seafood restaurants and a couple of carnival rides. It's a nice place and it's a nice change of pace from Seoul, but again, there's not a whole lot to do. The good thing is that it's quite close to Seoul.
