It really depends on class size and what kind of kids you have. I only teach 1 kindy class for one hour a day, 3 days a week. The class has 6 kids in it, 5 of which are awesome. The other 1 is awful... he can't stay focused for more than 30 seconds, never does his class/homework, constantly yells randomly in class, runs around the class, has repeatedly hit other kids for no apparent reason, and doesn't respond at all to any form of discipline. I think he has some mental issues because something is off about him. When he is absent (which thank god is a lot) the class runs smoothy, but when he is there the class becomes unruly. The saying "1 bad apple ruins the bunch" definitely holds true in kindy classes in my experience.

That's not really kindergarten though, not in the sense that the OP is talking about.

I love my kindies. I work 930 to 2 with the little ones and do elem from 230 to 5 or 7. It is a lot of work for the little ones but my afternoon is a breeze. My pay is awesome, too. I wouldn't have gotten as much with my other offers. I have to plan about 3 hours a week.

I do two 15 minute classes a week with both grades. I dreaded it at first and that didn't change for the first few weeks, but I'm getting the hang of it now. I've taken it upon myself to teach them the alphabet- reading, writing and speaking. It should give them a head start for later.

Today we sang the alphabet song at the start of the class, then they shouted out the letters when I help up flashcards, then shouted out words we've been practicing from a powerpoint (apple, bread, cat, dog, eye etc.) and then I showed them how to write e, E, f, F, g and G, and gave them worksheets where they copied down each letter on a line to the right of the letter. They use different coloured crayons for each letter, and the ones that finish early just draw on the back of the sheet

That class is meant to be 15 minutes but took about 20-30 minutes for each grade. It's okay once you get an activity going and they know what they're doing- and especially when they can just hand their sheet in and wander off at the end.

On activity I've used with good results with kindy is:

Practice the short vowles and consonants together by writing them on the board and chanting them. Like"

Bat Bet Bit Bot But

and then adding similar sounds

Pat Pet Pit Pot Putt or Dat Det Dit Dot Dut

There is a lot you can do with that.

The chants help them with pronunciation. Pointing at the word as you say it helps with word recognition (reading).

I'll have two students come to the front and give them a flyswatter or something. I'll say a word, and they race to slap the right one.

I'll have 1 student come up and I'll sing out 3 words and they have to tough the three in the order sang.

I'll do a matching game with index cards with a word written on the back that matches 1 of the other cards.

There is much you can do. And the kids like the games. And it helps them in 3 of the 4 language areas - listening, reading, and speaking.

I'll add items like ch and sh too...
