Article

Quote:
A mosque in Joplin, Missouri, was burned to the ground early Monday, just over a month after an attempted arson at the Islamic center, officials said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the latest fire. The mosque's security cameras were destroyed in the blaze, according to Sharon Rhine of the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

"This incident should not stop us from worshiping our God," one member of the Islamic Society of Joplin told CNN affiliate KYTV. "We are going to find a place probably to continue our service to God."

Kimberly Kester, another member, said the blaze was so intense that the building's bricks were still sizzling hours after the fire.

Carl Junction Fire Chief Bill Dunn called it a "complete loss."

Though investigators haven't determined the cause, Kester suspects it to be another incident of arson.

"I think this act of hate will bring us together," she told CNN iReport.

On July 4, surveillance video caught a man approaching the mosque and throwing "an ignited object" on the roof, causing minor exterior damage, according to the FBI.

The FBI was offering a combined reward of $15,000 for information leading to the suspect arsonist in that incident.

Kester said the mosque was a target of other acts of vandalism. In September of 2008, a sign at the mosque was set on fire and was also determined to be arson, according to CNN affiliate KODE.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for increased police protection at other places of worship in the wake of the fire and is offering a $10,000 reward for information on the latest incident.

The city of Joplin was the site of a monster tornado that ripped through the area in 2011. At least 161 people were killed and miles of businesses, homes and schools were destroyed. Kester said she is confident the community resolve shown after that devastating storm will again be present as the mosque and its members look to rebuild.

"Joplin survived such a devastating storm and we came together. We can all come together and build a great community once again," Kester said.

The mosque's burning comes as an Islamic center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, prepares to open for the first time after years of legal wrangling, vandalism and anti-Muslim sentiment.

A real shame. I just watched a documentary not too long ago about the controversy surround the buliding of the mosque. Apparently the building of the mosque was somehow going to lead to sharia law in Murfessboro.

I'm afraid it's all part of the nuttiness of the US at this point. Sad, but acts like this along with the gun violence (one on one and at public places) really are just another day in the news.

I'm afraid that with the ongoing economic issues people will be less tolerant or outright hostile of anyone that's a bit different.

Oh yes, it's getting worse.

Two mass shootings within just a few weeks. Craziness. This one is easier to understand than the batman one, white supremacist kills Muslims, but still brutal and terrible.

Um.... I know that perhaps a white supremacist may not be able to tell the difference (all them non-white folks looks da same) but Sikhs aren't Muslim

and ya, it really is a shame. To paraphrase the NRA... guns don't kill people - nut-jobs with guns kill people.

Welcome to the heat of the crazy season.

Yeah, I realized that a few moments after I posted it. My bad.

It's my impression that there is far less media attention to this burning and the deaths in the attack in Wisconsin than there was on the slaughter in Colorado. If true, is it that everything was said two weeks ago and there just isn't anything new to say this time around, given the short time gap?

All three events give us a black eye (is there a stronger term?) around the world. Three violent attacks, two ethnically motivated. Together, it makes it hard to continue to see the US as the 'land of the free' if you consider freedom from fear as anything more than an empty slogan.

It's a huge topic when you start to explore it - both comments about not being able to tell the difference between a Sikh and a Muslim as well as the general level of violence.

My conclusions are pretty negative in this area and to a degree it was part of what prompted me 4 years ago to start considering living outside of the States.

No matter what side someone would normally consider themselves on in traditional terms (right, left etc...) there's no consensus on anything at this point in the States. Public conversation seems to have vanished.

Frankly, a good portion of the country is too illiterate to turn itself around. A lot of US expats I've met here (as an example) are so caught up in one conspiracy theory (Obama's a socialist or a shill for corporate America, Masonic plans for world domination etc...the list is truly endless) or another it's difficult to see them ever focusing on anything meaningful. Most media is geared to entertaining the public who can only periodically pull themselves away from one screen or another. Seriously, people can't even focus on the stairway in front of them half the time.

These issues alone (and there are more IMHO) make creating a new national direction difficult to see. I honestly don't see an easy out in this era.

Does anyone else think this is an odd distinction? I'm sure it is not meant to sound like, "Hey, you're killing the wrong people. Go down the street and kill those other guys!" But that is how it comes across to me.

tideout has a point: "These issues alone...make creating a new national direction difficult to see." This is why a decisive Obama victory essential. FDR did not come in to office with the New Deal in his head. It is something he worked out as he went, and it brought prosperity and stability for 50 years. We need something like it again. The alternative is what I think of as the Italian disease. We could end up with a gazillion governments like the Italians have had, none being able to settle the issue.

No, it's merely pointing out how ignorant the moron who killed those people was. His bigotry seems to have driven him and, like so many other ignorant sods, he could not be bothered to actually learn something good about other people; he had to victimize others.

And in other news, virtually all christian, bhuddhist and Jewish holy sites have been burned down across the muslim world, most particularly throughout Arabia and North Africa.
