These incidents are all reprehensible, but don't represent a huge departure from the basic sentiments underlying American culture.
Anyone familiar with the Indians or Afro-Americans can tell u that. |

Does anyone else think this is an odd distinction? I'm sure it is not meant to sound like, "Hey, you're killing the wrong people. Go down the street and kill those other guys!" But that is how it comes across to me. |
No, it's merely pointing out how ignorant the moron who killed those people was. His bigotry seems to have driven him and, like so many other ignorant sods, he could not be bothered to actually learn something good about other people; he had to victimize others. |
Agreed - and back to what people are commenting on. The guy isn't smart enough to even differentiate between things he hates and what he merely doesn't understand. But I'm guessing relatively few Americans differentiate between Muslims and Sikhs. Why would they? Generally, people don't read books with any weight to them or read about other cultures, countries etc..
Americans have one of the lowest rates amongst developed countries for having a passport - a reflection of their interest in the world I think.
Honestly, his willingness to blindly and stupidly use violence seems as American as apple pie. |

Maybe Korea should send some self-righteous teachers over to the US to educate the xenophobic and nationalistic westerners there about religious tolerance. You know, Korea the country that can actually have two completely different major religions and not have everyone killing each other over it or screaming about banning turbans and minarets and don't have politicians vowing to root out Christian or Muslim infiltration of the government.
Of course I don't actually mean that and know how ridiculous it sounds, but for all the crap that gets dished about how xenophobic Koreans are, looking at incidents like this, maybe we should lighten up on them a little. |

Or maybe we should all criticize xenophobia/racism/hatred/etc wherever we see it? Kinda like there are critical topics about those things in Korea on the Korea boards, and then on the off-topic and current events boards there is discussion critical of Western (and other) countries.... oh wait, that distorts your awful, tired Korea-the-unfair-and-lopsided-victim-of-liberal-arts-major-tongue-lashings narrative. |

Is that really what we do though?
What I see is western self-censure and PC-babble when something untoward happens at home, but total intransigence at the ongoing outrages perpetuated against christian, jewish or bhuddhist holy sites in the muslim world. |

Fine, but there's a tendency to do comparisons and claims of "it doesn't happen back home". Back home when this happens we talk about gun control or maybe the Tea Party, we don't say "we are xenophobic and it's part of our culture". Just be fair. If Korea's culture is xenophobic, clearly the culture back home is as well. |

"The population consists for the most part of agriculturists and fishermen, which, excepting the better class, has a bad name for its hostility to foreigners and for its lowness and great uncouthness of its habits.
...the greater part of the inhabitants suffer under a reputation of rudeness and extreme depravity."

Isn't that quote taking two years after Reconstruction, when the Klan was rampant, and when Native Americans were being forced of their lands at gunpoint, to say nothing of sentiments towards Germans, Slavs, Eye-talians, and the Irish.
Are you seriously comparing the xenophobia of Korea to the xenophobia of America circa 1879? Sort of a draw there... |

Oh, enough. If this isn't a thread hijack, then what is? Are you seriously contending that any alleged xenophobia in Korea has anything to do with this shooting?
Your behavior reminds me of another poster, who can't let go a conversation that might have the slightest bit to do with the scientific history of the past without interjecting inanities that misapply the writings of a holy text to explain every material or efficient causation.
What a bore. |

Of course not, but anytime anything terrible happens in Korea 50 explanations of culture and how things need to change, specifically in adapting customs and attitudes from other countries, flood the board. But you're right back on topic. I've made the point. |
