So, I just applied to a recruiter. I'm pretty new to this whole thing but I have done my homework; I've all my documents prepared, my passport, resume, cover letter etc. How long have you typically waited for a response? Thanks. |

Depends.
On what?
What you asked for.
Where you wish to work (Hakwon, PS....).
Which Recruiters.
How you presented your application. |

Don't email just one recruiter and wait for a reply. Keep contacting recruiters until you decide on a school. |

It really depends on the recruiter, and as people have said, how you have presented yourself to them. Give it a few days and email them again, and if they don't reply to your second email move on. But then I have always been more pushy when it comes to job hunting, and during my last job hunt I emailed for updates on new jobs weekly at least.
And yes, apply to as many as possible and then weed out the ones that are the best fit for you. |

Good point, I've also found that persistance pays off. |

So how should you present yourself? I have applied to dozens of jobs and recruiters and only heard from less than a handful. I've only heard from 2 that would me get a job, but neither had anything that I was looking for at that time. I know the fact that I'm not white might not help, but really? |

Again, it depends on many things....
Do you have all your documents in hand and ready and was this made clear to the recruiters you applied with?
What kind of demands/preferences did you state in your application?
What your qualifications and experience looks like.
Available start date (ie did you apply to far in advance)?
Where you applied (Public School, Hakwon, University)?
How your Resume looks?
The kind of picture you included with your resume.
Up to a point, your age could play a role.
On top of all this, the market has changed in recent years, it is now far more competitive than it was before 2008. It is more of an employers market than before and hence employers are pickier. The same goes for recruiters who are now often flooded with applicants. |

A lot of recruiters won't respond unless you have all of your documents in hand- CBC w/apostille, copy of your degree w/notary & apostille, etc. If you're applying more than two months in advance, they'll also be slow to get back to you- most schools don't even start looking until a few weeks before they have to fill the position, so recruiters simply don't know what positions will be available more than two months down the road. Also, try not to be too picky about your location- if you only want to be placed in Seoul or Busan recruiters may not want to work with you. You don't have to settle for a rural location, but just keep an open mind about it-- there are still dozens of areas that aren't "in the sticks" and still provide plenty to do, plus Busan and Seoul are accessible from just about anywhere.
If your focus is on public schools, intake will be really slow right now. The fall semester has either already started or will start in the next week for most public schools, and most everything (that isn't super rural) will be filled. It's also too early to apply for public school positions for the spring. It's not impossible to find a public position right now, but it will be tough. If you're wanting to find a position in the next month or two, a private school is probably your best chance.
I'm also not white, but I never had any problems with the recruiters. Just make sure you have a professional headshot (tie & collared shirt if you're a guy, hair fixed & nice blouse if female, and SMILE) and that your materials look professional (although I would be surprised if most recruiters did more than just briefly glance at resumes). Schools, on the other hand, can and will be dicks about it, though. I had a few schools want to know what my religion is before interviewing me, and I had one GEPIK school pull their job offer after they realized I was Arab-American. But just keep at it, something will come along. |

Thanks RLib. I have my docs and my photo is professional. I'm not even aiming for Seoul or Busan. Definitely still trying though. We'll see. |

It used to be about 3 days before you would get a response. That is changing because of the huge onslaught of people wanting to feed off of the Korea public school cattle trough. 6 months ago when I was applying for the middle east I was getting responses up to two weeks later. For Indonesia I got a response 6 months later. If you're acceptable some recruiters might button hole your application and wait to use it for providing a job that will give the recruiter some success. So you might want to keep putting out applications, keep working at your present job and don't assume your going to get responses quickly. Nowadays they may come much later. |
