I would refer to it as clumsy and badly constructed
Which if done regularly tends to hamstring students from learning to explore the language and their imaginations through writing.

I met John and Dave both

John and Dave both met me

I met John and Dave both at the same time
There is nothing wrong with any of the sentences. I'd probably use "I met both John and Dave". Also, I would say the last is somewhat wordy, but I'd need to see the context in which it was used - in order to understand why the "at the same time" was necessary.
It's about context and what the writer wants to emphasize.
"Did you meet John or Dave yesterday?
Both! Wow! Did you see John at the beginning of work and Dave at the end? Wow! You met them at the same time!!" |
