Call one of the embassies in Japan. They (Fukuoka) may let you get it there on a tourist visa. But call them to see what paperwork you need. |

Ouch, they make you guys jump through hoops these days.
I married my wife in the states and came over on a tourist visa, then switched to an F2. I recently got switched to an F6 with no problems.
Of course this was a couple of years back (the F2 I mean).
Good luck! |

Yeah know Laura, I hate to judge, but for something so important you are really being lazy about this. You didn't really expect an answer over the phone, right? Why don't you get some documents together and go down to immigration and try. See what happens. TAKE SOME INITIATIVE!! |

I called the Korean consulate in Fukuoka. They said they can't do it because their consulate is too small.
So I called the Korean consulate in Osaka...Success! They can do it! And unlike the Korean consulate in America, they don't require an apostillized criminal background check. The person I talked to on the phone was so sweet and helpful, which was a refreshing change after dealing with Korean immigration.
Thank you for your help everybody. |

I just turned in my paperwork today and in addition to what the hikorea website says, they also wanted a typed story of our love (in Korean) and a bunch of other forms they handed us at the desk... they literally just kept shoving forms at us that basically all had the same information (ARC number, passport number, foreign address, blah-blah-blah). They also didn't accept both of us having jobs as a sign of financial responsibility, so we had to give them some paper that showed the deed for an extra house my father-in-law owns. We also had to have printed wedding pictures to hand in with the application forms. So, this is what I needed to transfer from an e-2 to an f-6...
*Passport
*ARC
*Documents that prove the family relations (marriage certificate, a copy of family register (Korean), documents verifying the marital relations, and maybe some other Korean documents?)
*Documents that prove the financial capability (We gave copies of our bank books to prove our jobs were paying us/how much they were paying, my contract to show I had housing, and the deed(?) to my father-in-law's extra apartment)
*Translated (into English) and Korean-notarized (at a US approved notary) copy of marriage certificate
*Letter from the US embassy showing they recognized my Korean marriage
*Typed "story of our love" (Korean)
*Wedding photos
*Reference of a spouse with Korean nationality (THEY GAVE US THIS FORM AT IMMI)
*Fee (single-entry visa: $50 (USD), multiple-entry visa: $80 (USD))
*A bunch of other random forms they gave us at immigration
*1 color photo of the applicant (size : 3.5㎝ x 4.5㎝) (I did this at a photo store (remember: wear dark clothes, use a light background, must show forehead and ears))
What a hassle... and now I get to wait 3-4 weeks to see if it gets accepted @.@;;;
Hope that helps!! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me~ ^.^ |
Seems like they've started applying the rules for some of the "special" nations to all nations. It used to be fairly easy for most of the western nations to get their F2, but places like China had to go above and beyond, they needed additional health checks, and they needed to do things like provide a picture of the house they'd be living in and write about it.
I hadn't heard about anyone from the western countries being required to provide letters and photos or a background check before for an F6. I knew you needed a fairly extensive one for the F5 though. |

Ok, so I have finally obtained my F6 visa!
Doing a visa run to the Korean Consulate in Osaka was a breeze compared to the documents (criminal background check, etc.) required by the Korean Consulate in America.
I handed in my paperwork, was not asked a single question about my relationship, and --POOF--two days later walked in and got my visa. The best part was that the employees at the consulate were incredibly helpful and kind (unlike when I called immigration in SK or the consulate in the US).
I highly recommend doing a visa run to Osaka if you were married on a tourist visa waiver.
Now my next step is finding an awesome job!
If anyone is in a similar situation and needs help, please feel free to PM me. |

Isn't marriage great! All the free-money in the world!
....You know you still have to good at teaching to get a good job. It's not as simple as convincing a local to do the city hall dance with you. |

And you sound like a Goldie Gold-digger. Seems like you care more about getting a job than your spouse. Did you even have a honeymoon? Did you even have a wedding? Wouldn't be the first time someone perpetrated a fake marriage to gain an advantage in the market. Too bad you're about 10 years too late. |

This is a board about teaching and living in Korea. Why do you expect her to give the details about how she is happily married?
Hahaha. |

Just an update for those who are thinking about doing a Tourist Visa to F6 Osaka Run, they still do it but the time period it now 3 to 7 days (Most likely closer to 3). I was quoted this time scale today, phoning on the behalf of a non-Korean speaking friend.
Also phoned Hong Kong (they can speak English) & Taiwan. Taiwan is possible for the F6 visa but the visa department in Hong Kong is super busy and couldn't give a clear answer.
If anyone knows of any other locations, my friend (and in turn myself) would be interested in more info. Thanks. |
