I also call nonsense on the broken air conditioner story. They are trying to save electricity.
If you are at a public or middle school, the chances are you aren't being renewed anyway, so wear the shorts.
If you could be renewed next year, wear shorts anyway. Proviso, it might be best of you've been there for 6 months or longer as you are then protected by the labor board.
Finally in Korea, you should always do what you want, and then apologise later if necessary. I have never heard of anyone successfully seeking permission. (exageration to add some colour to my reply). |

There's your solution right there. Faint. Or at least fake it. Are you at a public school or a hogwon? If it's a PS then there should be a nurse. Go to her often and tell her your symptoms (google the symptoms of heat exhaustion). Sprinkle some water on your shirt and on your face to look like you've been sweating profusely. Take a sick day.
My guess is that you're at a PS because a hogwon would never leave the AC unrepaired for weeks. It wouldn't take more than a few days of little Minju and his classmates being taught in a sauna before the moms started withdrawing them and sending them to another hogwon - with AC. But if it's summer break and the only person around is some foreigner who might believe the story about the broken AC and tough it out then some tight fisted admin at a PS might do this to save some money.
Are you sure that it's actually broken? Is it possible that someone simply flipped the circuit breaker switch? Does it work in other rooms? Can you go hang out in another room that does have AC? |

| I second Troglodyte's advice. In the winter, it's the same, except it's the lack of heat that's the issue. Sick days with "advice from the doctor" that the temperature at work are the cause and that you should use the AC/heater will get them to turn it on immediately. |

Koreans are expected to wear pants. Why should we be given special treatment? Could be considered discrimination, depending on which way you look at it, and the good Lord knows how much foreigners in this country complain about being discriminated against.

It angers me that women are allowed to let the cool air flow through their nether regions when men aren't allowed to do so. I'm a man and i've got more of a biological reason to keep my nether regions cool than any woman has. Arrrgggh! |

Get those cheesecloth- thin pants that Korean men wear.
Seriously, you can get them in the markets. They look like regular
dress pants, but the wind blows right through them.
Just tell them you want summer pants, and they will know what you mean.
As for the women, if they want to dress like they are at the beach, that's their problem.
I don't recall any of the older female teachers dressing like that.
I really think it looks unprofessional. |
