2 main questions
1. What is the standard process for getting hired directly by a provincial office, outside of the epik program? Do you get an official e-mail or anything else about the hire?
2. Are they usually last minute with visa documents? I was apparently hired a month ago but I haven't heard anything or received any visa documents. The orientation is supposed to be in 2 weeks and my recruiter hasn't bothered to keep me posted.
Is this normal or am I just being a newbie?
Any advice regarding whether I should cut my losses and move on or wait it out would help. Thanks.
My recruiter just seems sketchy because ever since they received my documents, they haven't bothered to contact me and I'm the one who has to pester them for updates. The only updates I've gotten over the last month are really vague and haven't resulted in anything such as "you'll get them next week" followed up by "oh, she sent them yesterday" followed by another "oh, she just sent them out yesterday"... what? |

Are you sure this was directly through the provincial office? Seems late, and since you mentioned a recruiter, it seems like they are just going to wait until there is a school that needs a teacher. This means you will know specifically which school it is, but the recruiter might just pretend you have been "randomly" assigned to it.
Was this supposed to be an EPIK school by chance? You are likely to get a location that isn't that desirable. Since you sent your documents you are kind of at the mercy of the recruiter now.
Good luck, don't pay for a flight until you know for certain. |

you mention docs but no contract - what exactly have you received and what exactly did you send them?
i.e., did you sign and return a contract or is that what you are waiting for?
did you interview w the provincial office directly or just the recruiter? if you interviewed with the office, you must have a telephone number contact info - if not google them and get it, then just call them and ask for an update.
finally, you can always just say to your recruiter you need to know the status because you will look for another job elsewhere if this one is not going to happen; that should help a bit.
chances are also people are on holiday, you know. |

I was hired through the Gyeongsangnam-do office of education. I reckon the time it takes is mostly dependent on the recruiter because it seemed like they handled most of the visa process. Here is how it went for me:
1. I filled out the application and sent it to the recruiter.
2. Somebody from the GOE interviewed me the next day.
3. I accepted the job and shipped my documents to the recruiter.
4. A week or so after the recruiter received my documents, she shipped me a contract and notice of appointment.
5. I sent that crap to the Korean consulate in New York, where it took one business day to process.
I've had problems with recruiters in the past where they were being flaky after I mailed them a bunch of crap that was expensive and took a long time to get. I usually just call them when this happens. Find the agency's phone number in an email footer or on the internet and call.
It probably doesn't matter if you miss the orientation. There are two for where I work. The first one was short and useless. The second one is something they'll just make you go to later. I started in June and mine isn't until the fall sometime. I'm pretty certain it's the EPIK orientation even though I'm not employed through EPIK. |

You have so much experience, you haven't worked in Korea yet?
What exactly is your situation?
Are you a newbie (take what is offered) or someone already in Korea (visit school, then sign)?

Uhhhhhhhhh, my mistake.
6. I received my visa, came to Korea, and started my job.
I just listed what I did because it seems like OP has to do the same crap for the same kind of job. |

How do you know you have the job?
I was also hired by an MOE but I was sent a contract before I sent my docs. Then I had to call my recruiter after a week to check my status and then another 2dys later. Finally got the info I needed for a visa.
Korea is pretty last minute in every division it seems. |

| I got a job through Incheon MOE for an afterschool job. It was through a recruiter and pretty shady seemingly. It worked out OK in the end. |
