Dave's is definitely slow. I know Dave is probably coasting off of tons of Ad money, but this place needs an overhaul in a bad way. |

I would argue the slow down (if any) on Dave's is largely the result of the growing number of online offerings for expats. Nowadays expats can network on other sites, on FB, via Twitter, blogs and so on. That means the options are more numerous and it is natural the online pop breaks down and spreads out. |

I don't see many ads here. Maybe my popup blocker is just that damn good!
I can't see Dave making a good financial haul here. If there isn't a revamp to the site there might be a thread entitled:
Proof that Dave's ESL Cafe is dying. THis site has served its purpose, but as other posts have already illuminated; there are so many other sources out there.
Oh yeah. The ESL market will never die as long as Koreans continue to struggle with learning English.

I heard from a trusted source that he has made over a million dollars from this site. |

It has also slowed up due to the mods having such a strangle hold on most of the posters. Most got sick of the power struggle and moved elsewhere...BUT I do have to say, the Mods have been more lenient as of late, and that bodes well for the site. Nobody likes a police state. |

Isn't he paid for each job posting? There's the money. |

Police State?
Seriously this site, like many moderated forums online includes a TOS that all users agree to when they join up. That TOS outlines what is ok and what is not ok. If a person is not happy with the rules, they can certainly find other sites. No site has perfect moderation, mistakes happen as do oversights but one thing I have noticed, moderated sites tend to generate far more productice and contructive exhanges and far more useful information when compared to un-moderated sites who usually quickly turn into little online fight clubs. Now, each type of site has its uses but if your main aim is to provide a site to discuss living and working in a foreign country (Korea in this case) then moderation is preferable to non-moderation. I remember when this site was un-moderated for a while: it became a complete mess.
So, basically this site offers a service and some advantages and drawbacks. Up to each person to decide if it fits what they need or not. |

This.
The ads are $75 a pop. The Korea board alone gets about 8-10 a day.

I first stumbled onto this site several years ago when I explored the idea of coming over here. I will say this site has become more "sanitized" over the last several years. Some controversial topics are quick to "disappear" unlike when I first found this site. Members were definately more rude and were quicker to crack kimchi jokes and the like.
As for the other issue, the recession in America has played a role in this "surge". Too many teachers applying has kept wages down and allowed employers to put more work on their teachers for less money than before. The market is maturing, no doubt, but this unprecedented downturn has sped up these results. If or when the economy ever recovers back home, things will not go back to pre - 2009 levels over here. But, it will improve from what it is now. Of course the longer this goes on, eventually wages may start going down. Let's pray for a speedy recovery back home..... |

If the "search" function actually worked, then we wouldn't see the same threads over and over again.
The fact that the search function doesnt work keeps the boards alive.
It isnt that Dave isnt listening, he's just biding his time.
Before long, the strong stream of posters will reduce down to a trickle (where we are now) and then this site will fall into obscurity.
Until the inevitable fall into the deep dark crack of a middle aged black hairdresser named Shlawanda, Dave will have made his dough and then the next players will take up the baton, ala Koreafridge or Wayfreakookin.
It was nice gnowing you all. I especially thank Tigerbeer (where is he now?)for the inital help 10 yeers ago.
The name of this thread should be: "Why Dave's is dying" |

Yeah, but there seems to be a never-ending stream of idiots and losers who want to complain about every preceived slight whether real or imagined. "Oh my god! That Korean looked at me! That kid tried to say hi to me! The price of oatmeal is $1 more than I'm used to; what a ripoff! How dare that waiter try to speak English to me! Koreans celebrated a gold medal in the Olympics! They're all a bunch of racists out to keep me down!"
They're like a roach infestation. However many times you ban them, they inevitiably come back under a new user name to continue their whining. |

While Madoka was harsh, he also has a point about the return trollers on here. He also has a point about certain users on here who trip over their own feet in their rush to their keyboards as they found anything that could remotely make Koreans look bad. These threads pop up frequently enough and usually have no other point that to bash or demean and are not even formulated in a way that could foster discussion. Heck, you would have to be blind not to see it. |

You've got wave after wave of young, often immature graduates coming out here constantly and, let's face it, a lot of them have a pretty miserable time. Of course you're going to get a lot of the same naive comments and venting against the host country caused by feelings of culture shock. If he doesn't like the tone of the place why doesn't he stop whining himself and go and post his amusing news stories elsewhere? |
