It's actually easier here in China now

right uh huh. which is why you continue to post on the Korea board. Wink

No offense YTMD, that always confused me a bit of people who continue to post when the have moved on to somewhere else? Maybe it is your hobby. Well at least you contribute.

I can only speak for myself about that, Skippy. I still post here from time to time even though I left Korea a couple of years ago (most likely for good). I like to keep up with things going on over there (especially public school job related stuff), as I work for a government supported Korean school where I am now. I work with, teach, and live around a lot of Koreans, so I still have a vested interest I suppose.

This site certainly isn't what it used to be back in the mid-late 2000s, but it is still a hell of a lot more interesting/entertaining than the China forums. There aren't that many posters to start with, and you've got a handful of people posting there that just spew out the same old boring lecture style posts over and over when someone asks a question/posts a new topic.

As far as the public school desk-warming thing goes, it certainly sucks a bit when you get that VP that follows everything to the extreme. We just got a new one sent over from Korea last term that is like that. He came in like a buzz-saw, wanting to change many things. He has succeeded in increasing our teaching hours to the max and guilting people into not asking for time off (as well as other things). It's no big deal though, that is what is required of us, and if we don't like it we can leave. I happen to like my job a lot and have no intentions of leaving it.

Oh, btw I was one of those fortunate ones in Korea that had an awesome VP and head CT (head of my district for the Korean teachers) that let me leave early, not come in when not needed, tele-commute, blah-blah even though they knew exactly what the MOE required. I also knew better (even had I not, my CT made sure to remind of that each time, haha) to not share that with other teachers in my district.

I don't get it... I always dreamed of a job where I go in, don't do much and get paid...

Now, before you think I'm a Korean or gyopo or something like that, here's my argument

- firstly... What are you gonna do at home that's sooo important that trumps being at school???

- 2ndly, you get paid.... PAID for a full days work and that rubbish that others are to understand you're a foreigner and you have STUFF to do... Humbug!!!

- 3rdly... Do something creative or constructive with your time when you're there... Other schools leave to your own devices b'coz they know waygooks are lazy and would rather sleep and earn money than work for it... Always funny how hardworking and humble folk are when they need money and a job but when they have it they slack...!!!

-4thly, you moaning like this including others who agree with the OP will give the powers that be all the reason to phase out time-off for people like myself and others... Pretty soon I'll get a notice to come in simply b'coz you guys can't learn to shut up, bite the bullet and do your job!!!

Lastly, You make too much noise... You're a grown ass person... Get on with it... Warm that desk!!!

There's a 3rd option besides complaining or sucking it up. You could always put in your notice and quit working for people who make your life more difficult for their own amusement. How badly do you need that job?

3 public schools (elementary, middle and high) for a total of seven years. Never once had an inspection. Not a single one.

Although that could well be because the inspector doesn't fancy driving out into the countryside and over the mountains to hunt for a school tucked away in some remote village.

No doubt. On the other hand, the schools where I worked were in a cluster of schools less than a 15-minute drive away from the regional education office.

And they had nothing better to do with their time then to drive over twice a day and check on the FT? (I wonder just how many of those jobs were created to give some MOE official's son a position.)

That gives a whole new meaning to the term "anal retentive management"

Free a/c, fast internet, lots of supplies to help with planning lessons, it's been too hot outside to enjoy the outdoors, full pay and health care. If you're not comfortable with that either you're a grouch or you need to change your working environment.
