I was placed at my elementary school by my district education office. Who is supposed to provide me with the certificate of employment? If it is the district office, is there a specific department? I want to waste as little time as possible getting this document if I have to go to their HQ.

Getting one of those has been a time waster for me. Been here over two years and still don't have one.
Towards the end of my second year, I renewed my EPIK contract at the provincial office of education (this past spring) and I asked about the proof of employment or certificate of employment. They said they could provide that. I did not ask for one at the time, but will go through them the next time I am ready to get one.
Before that, on two occasions separated by about a year, I have had English-speaking Korean teachers at my school communicate a request to my high school's admin office to provide me with the certificate of employment.
I think I have read that they are required by law to provide it upon request. But I have never received one (with no explanation). I also have not pressed the matter, for now.
Since your placement was through the district office (county education office?) perhaps there is someone there who can provide you with the document, but you already have suggested that.

| The school does not provide the certificate. You contact your Provincial/Metropolitan City Office of Education's superintendent for foreign teachers and that person will generate the certificate. I got mine in both Korean and English after E-mailing the supe. |

With the initial help of an English-speaking Korean teacher (not my co-teacher) I was finally able to navigate the website, in Korean (not English), for my Provincial Office of Education well enough to get the phone number for the superintendent of foreign teachers in my province. But I'll be danged if they readily give out an email address.
I always get the impression that they want to avoid that as much as possible, to avoid written documentation of actual communications.
If anyone could provide any email addresses or links to email addresses for the "superintendent for foreign teachers" at each Provincial Office of Education, that would be great. |

To the last two posters above: They don't throw out the E-mail address because the government's addicted to that joke of a database program, NEIS. If it worked, you could easily request the thing yourself and print it out yourself. Well, if you could read Korean, you could do that.
The problem with NEIS for a GET is four-fold:
- User must install the certificate and use IE with ActiveX.
- Registration agreement seems to accept ARC numbers, but cannot tell due to number 3 below.
- Will not process any requests for information.
- NEIS is only in Korean.
Do not--and I mean DO NOT--allow the school to install this joke onto your own computer. I made that mistake years ago. It trashed the computer so badly that the drive could not be rescued. NEIS sounds like a good idea. In practice, no.
If you can't get an E-mail address or someone who can communicate with you directly on the phone, then you can do is personally visit the Office of Education and get the thing on the spot.

And a link to the form to request it? A link that does not require registration in Korean with a Korean residence number...
I'm in the US and need to get an official certificate of employment fairly quickly for a visa in another country.
When I was processing a visa to Korea in 2009, I was able to get one from a couple of my old hakwons. I remember they were specific government forms with the business' official stamp.
I need that for two places I worked within SMOE from 2009 to earlier this year. |

There is no form to request it. Simply send E-mail to the supervisor of foreign teachers at SMOE.

The document the employer provides you will have a stamp on it. The only government stamp that will appear will be the stamp signifying that the certificate of employment came from the SMOE.

It doesn't matter at how many places you worked if you were employed by SMOE: there will only be one certificate of employment.
Clarification: My posting above stating that SMOE is the entity that issues such certificates was addressed to a poster who was employed by SMOE.
Disregard all of the above if you were employed by one of those after-school companies. |

Thanks. I had already sent an email to SMOE HQ asking the same question. I happen to have worked with one of the two expat reps there.
Hopefully I'll get it soon. Time is pressing. It would have been nice if my recruiter for this current job (outside of Korea) had informed me an official document would be necessary. |

For people working with SMOE, you can go to this website to see how to apply for the certificate of employment.

Which says:

| They are mistaken in when they must give you that certificate. It is given upon demand by the employee and it is not a one-off deal. |
