A recent death got me thinking - how many of you "feel it" when a celeb/icon passes away? No one you know, of course, but someone you've admired from afar.
Is there any passing that really hit ya? |

Steve Irwin is the first name that popped into my head when I read this post.
I've watched his show and thought , this guy is F-ing crazy and it's only a matter of time before he bites the dust.
But really, it was HOW he died that got me - freak accident. I'd always thought it'd be a snake or croc that got him in the end, and not a stingray.
I've scuba dived & hand-fed manta rays in the Caymans, but would never even consider messing around with snakes or crocs, like he did on a regular basis. So, of all the ways to die, I wouldn't have bet on that one for him. |

When Pierre Trudeau died it really hit me hard. Called my mom and we both cried on the phone. All my friends, from all over creation, hooked up via e-mail to share our recollections and sadness.
I grew up with him, I was born when he was first elected, and so throughout my youth and adolescence he was a constant presence. His vision of Canada and government really influenced my own. Then even into my adulthood he was still around, coming back periodically with a book or important speech to slap around the miscreants that replaced him.
Still, more than a decade later, I miss him.
I was also struck when Charles Shulz died. They way it coincided with the last Peanuts cartoon was really poignant.
Then yesterday Joe Kubert died. |

Lost George Jefferson and today, Arnold Horshack. These are the characters I grew up with. |

Yeah, tv personalities hit me harder for some reason. When Michael Landon died, I felt it more than my dad's passing.
Also, John Ritter was a big loss for me. |

Tommy Cooper, just because I was amongst those people laughing at him while he suffered a fatal heart attack on stage. His stage persona, widely recognized as at genius level, was for things to go wrong when he was doing magic tricks. In retrospect he probably wouldn't have wanted to go any other way. |

Musicians. The passing of musician makes me sad.
In recent memory - Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Big loses. Especially Whitney. Good Lord what happened to her? What a complete fall she had. Thanks Bobby!
And I was only 2 when he died so it obviously didni't hit me then, but John Lennon. Whenever I see his "Imagine" video I always think, "Damn, I wish that guy was still alive." I always wonder what he'd be up to today if he were alive. Probable duke-ing it out with Bono and Clooney over who's gonna save the world first.
Always wonder too what people like Hendrix, Joplin, Marvin Gaye, would be up to if they were still around. |

Stop worshiping celebrities, that's my only advice for people who think like this. |

John Lennon getting shot. That was a rough night. Led Zeppelin's drummer Jon Bonham dying also was sad for me. |

I used to teach my students the idiom "the good die young." I don't even know if I taught it correctly but to me it means that no matter how long "good" people live, it's not long enough.
Murphy's law I guess, but the old geezers who were total jerks during their lives have the highest probability of living well into their 90's.
Back on topc...far and away Patrick Sawyze's death was a big time blow to me. I idolized everything about that guy.
The second big one for me was John Candy. Watch the movie "Only the lonely" and you will meet my mother...lol. |

Yeah, I'll agree Patrick Swayze's passing was too damn soon.
I immediately just thought of that SNL 'Chippendale' skit where he was dancing with Chris Farley ... hilarious stuff.
Swayze was a healthy, physical specimen, who got the 'Big C' & that really stinks.
It's less surprising when people die due to living the hard & fast life on drugs (Whitney, Chris Farley, John Belushi, too many musicians to name) or people who are just unhealthy (John Candy)
Yeah, it stinks that they died , but that kinda stuff is preventable so I feel less sympathy. |
