Every human being has been, or will be a loser.
so what the hell are we arguing about!
I met a guy at one of my schools years ago, he was a Harvard graduate and teaching for 1.8 million at this BS hakwon. he ended up drifting from hakwon to hakwon, all the school owners would exploit his degree, tell all the mothers he was there etc.. I ran into him a few years later and he was still working in a hakwon, salary 2.2 + housing, 1-9pm., complaining how much he hates his job etc.. but he loves Korean women so he stays. he was 30years old.
if that's not a loser! I really don't know what is.
said he spent almost 100 grand going to Harvard. hasn't saved anything here, last I heard he went to Thailand to teach for like 30.000bht a month.
LOL, ohhhh man. what a loser! |

This not true for proper jobs. If you are a software developer, nurse, engineer etc etc then you have built up valuable experience.

Sounds like you're a loser who has to put others down to make yourself feel better. Anyone can lose their job or be downsized, even the above mentioned. They may have to travel to find work, though they may find it easier than most other people (ESL teachers, office workers, store managers, car facotry worker, ect.)
If you're happy with what you do and you're making way for the future, you're not a loser. If you do ESL repeatedly for years. hate it, and keep staying, then you're a loser. I've been here a few years and enjoy my public school job. I have a great rep in my area as a teacher. Pretty good for a guy with no TESOL or Ed degree. Just good old fahioned gumption, hard work, experience, and talant.
Moral of the story, if you like it here, stay. If you don't, get out and don't be a loser! |

Nurses, engineers and computer programmers don't get downsized. They pretty much write their own ticket.
Of-course not every TEFLer is an underachiever. Hell Steven Revere and the couple with the K-pop website started of in TEFL.

What, are you talking about the Stephen Revere? The guy who wrote that book about how to learn Korean, appeared on tv a few times and edits a free magazine? He acually started off in TEFL? Nah, don't believe it. |

You need to revisit that list!
Nurses get downsized sometimes, so do engineers in certain fields and computer programmers or any IT tech is highly vulnerable to being replaced, fired or downsized. |

I would never call anyone a loser who helps sick people, it's a noble profession in that sense, but in turns of social standing esl teachers would outclass lots of nurses, but in turn be out classed by the ones with the more specialized jobs. The same goes for IT. |

I can tell you weren't working in IT back when the dot.com bubble burst (massive layoffs - even amongst programmers) for a while back then but largely... yes.

Not all nurses make all that much money. In most cases it's a pretty working class type of thing. I mean all those people working at the old folks home are nurses, it's not all people working in the xray room at the hospital. I guess it also depends on if you are only talking about RNA's or CNA's. I have some friends who became nurses and the amount of the job that is basically cleaning up after people who can't take care of themselves tells me I'd rather be an ESL teacher than a nurse. Also, being a nurse is usually a career, whereas esl teaching is usually a year or two. Now if you want to talk about being a career nurse versus a career esl teacher, well that's another thing. Nurses are saints, and I'm sure we will all end up needing one sometime, but as a profession it doesn't have much class. |

Seriously, Computer programmers are downsized all the time or their job is farmed out to someone in India who will do the work for a 1/3 of their pay. |

Learning/ knowing Korean isn't really that helpful in Korea.
Foreigners who speak Korean in class often get in trouble for using it. |

My Korean co-teacher used to complain to me that I wasn't saying the right thing. However she was a bit of a snipe. Overall Koreans like foriegners that try to use thier language. You should study Korean if you are in Korea. |

Speaking Korean in class may be a bad idea but learning Korean is VERY helpful in KOREA outside your class.....
As for foreigners getting in trouble for speaking Korean in Korea, thats pretty funny if you meant outside the classroom..... |
