The bolded part is what caught me. I'm now thinking every time i see a girl in a restaurant or cafe, snapping photos of herself for minutes on end, she is paying tribute to her surgeon.

Quote:
Welcome to the plastic surgery capital of the world.

When I enter JK Plastic Surgery Clinic in Seoul's "beauty belt," the strip of plastic surgery clinics in the Gangnam district, a pretty receptionist greets me.

I can't help but look at her doll-like features and wonder if she, too, has gone under the knife.

Statistically, it's not out of the question.

According to a report from The Economist Online, a 2009 Trend Monitor survey says that one in five Korean women have had plastic surgery.
----------------------

According to Kwon Seung-taik, a plastic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic and hand surgery at Seoul National University Hospital, it's no surprise that Korean doctors are skilled at plastic surgery.

Kwon cites a number of reasons.

First is the high level of domestic surgeries, which, according to Kwon, is due to the fact that Koreans have a special attitude toward beauty.

To Koreans, beauty is something that is attainable through hard work -- just like anything else.

"It's not just about desire, says Kwon. I prefer to use the word 'challenge' -- Koreans see plastic surgery, and becoming prettier, as a challenge.

According to Kwon, Koreans have less respect for inherited beauty.

They see beauty not as something to be envied, but something to be attained.

"It's kind of like an if youre pretty, I can be pretty too!' attitude," he says.

Coming from the West I was pretty skeptical about plastic surgery because mostly what you see are big breasts and rich older men and women.

But in Korea it is different. It is cheaper, more affordable and they consider things such as lasik as a form of beauty sugery. It is a sliding scale. Women get small procedures done not total makeovers.

I have slightly softened my opinion of it that I am not against it now if the persons character and integrity are still intact and they do not look like they have had it

I don't have too many qualms with plastic surgery. I mean I've had orthodontics and laser treatment on my skin.

Breast implants. I love 'em. If a girl has small boobs, why not get it done? It is a shame though when girls with nice boobs ruin them.

Eyelid surgery. Hate it. I don't really see the allure. I like women with slanty eyes.

Jaw-bone surgury. Gross. I mean that's just going too far, isn't it?

I will say one thing about plastic surgery. It's really not going to help your beauty if you don't look after your weight. You can get the eyelid surgury and a nose job or whatever, but if your over-weight, what does it matter? Anyone who is basically fit and healthy will be attractive. The rest is just icing on the cake.

More like 4 out of 5 have had some sort of plastic surgery done. That is the reason there are so many pretty women here.

I too think that last bolded part is interesting... and in a way, I agree with it. While we can talk about how attractive confidence is... and it is, physical beauty still catches the eye. And if someone works at it, I have a certain amount of respect for that. If they train, eat right, and so on - so that they can be healthy and attractive, I can see why it can be viewed as an achievement.

Surgery, while different, could be seen in the same light by some.

My BS meter just exploded. I think they're using 'cosmetic procedures' in the very widest sense of the term possible.

I like the way she blames it all on the media - nothing to do with all the before and after adverts plastering the walls of the subway trains and billboards.

You have to put your pic. on your resume here. Many people have told me that ugly girls don't get hired, or have a much harder time.

Don't know how much truth there is to that rumour. It's the sort of thing people would say as sour grapes if they didn't get the job. I've taught a hell of a lot of plain female adult students who had very high powered jobs here.

From my understanding, it's most important for young girls for their first job. I mean, I doubt people are really expecting adjummas to be attractive. I don't think it's as important for high powered jobs either, but more for entry level office work, secretary work, etc. My girlfriend was working at an office last year that was hiring her replacement worker, and was helping to interview the candidates. Her boss talked pretty frankly about how they all looked when considering who to hire, and told her that one of the reasons that they hired my GF is because she is attractive. The boss is a women, but it's kind of like a prestige thing to have an attractive person in the front of the office I guess.

watching this country develop is like watching a horrible, spoilt little brat grow up. its taken on the worst possible characteristics from the world and seems to have forgotten the good aspects of its own society and culture.
