What a weird, serious-minded way of looking at sport. Any other joy you want to kill today? How about telling us even the cutest puppy will eventually grow old and die? That no-one else in the world really gives a crap about how much you love your partner/spouse? |

As i travel more I see how patriotism and sports nationalism is not such a great thing. I have to listen to students tell me how Korea wins because of metal chopsticks and kimchee ... And btw, i love puppies. |

As if this is the only controversy regarding officiating at the Olympics.
Also, I wonder if this is any worse than the Americans accusing the Chinese of being cheats? |

| I am sorry that I wrote that. The Canadian players were upset that the official should have warned them before making that call at such a crucial point in the game. |

| That soccer game was probably the most exciting event at the games. There were some problems with the officiating for sure, but you got to hand it to both teams for a great match. The U.S women's soccer team has been a powerhouse in recent years, and losing to Canada would have been a real blow. Hats off to both teams. |

No money and our government cares very little about athletics.
Our athletes are doing what they can against a loaded deck. |

Are we talking about Canada or Jamaica? Cool Runnings was a great movie. |

| How is Canada underrepresented? In 2008 we finished 14th in overall medals. We're not the 14th most populous country in the world. The only countries that got more medals than us with smaller populations are Belarus, Cuba and Australia. |
You go by overall medals? As in, bronze=gold?
Here's a link to the Wikipedia 2008 Medal Table (we're 19th)
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics_medal_table#section_1
But I get what you're saying, about population. It's just another excuse, though. |
Yeah, I was going by total medals in this case. People will say that it's a weak argument to talk about population, but when you have a swimming event with 4 Americans and 4 Chinese with both countries training their athletes since birth, other countries like Canada who only have one participant are just picking up the scraps. Out of 302 golds, 84 (28%) were taken by the US and China. 137 (45%) were taken by the US, China, Russia and the hosts. So, yeah, the rest of the 300 countries there had to divvy up the remaining half of the gold medals. Saying that, Canada should have still walked away with more than 1.
I didn't bring up our geographical realities as a nation as an excuse, just one potential cause. The point is, countries like China, the US and most European nations don't have this problem. They may have other issues, but it's certainly a biggie. The fact is, we're a very strong winter Olympic country, so it's not like we're weak in sports in general. It's all about perspective. |
