I'm curious what cities or areas you think are the prettiest or most beautiful in South Korea. Where would you find great scenic views? Pretty natural or historical surroundings?

(Obviously, it's totally a matter of opinion, so no right or wrong answers here...)

I've always been partial to the view from the window as the plane takes off but hey, that's just me. Very Happy

You can google 50 most beautiful places in Korea. There was a CNN slideshow/article awhile back that had some interesting places on it.

Most of that is photo-shopped / filtered trash. I've been to several of the places in the list where the pictures look fabulous and it looks nothing like it, and it wasn't worth putting on any list.

Jeju, but make sure you rent a car or scooter unless you plan on bicycling or hiking the olle trails.

I really think having a car or scooter makes the trip. With a scooter you're taking a pleasant ride through coastal scenery and stopping every now and then to see an interesting beach or rock formation and have a snack. Without a scooter you're waiting for the once hourly bus to drive 30 minutes and see a rock formation.

This applies to some of the other nice parts of Korea like Geoje-do and Namhae as well.

Anywhere out of the major conurbations is likely to be much prettier than in

Jiri-san is the nicest place I've been. I'm glad Namhae is getting some mentions because I plan to ride around it on the scooter and do some hiking when the weather cools down a bit. I'm pretty excited about it actually Very Happy

All of Korea is pretty if you just pretend the buildings aren't there.

Example

Bukhan Mountain : Fabulous, but got a bunch of buildings surrounding it. And then when you get the top you either see Seoul (yay, not) or fog.

Seoraksan is nice. Right in that canyon where you can't see the city.

Personally, I think they should tear the whole country down and start again from scratch. Straight roads with sidewalks, interesting architecture, aircons, pipes hidden, signs that are smaller and stylish. But then again parts of the US ain't no picnic either.

Jirisan can be amazing. Especially the view from the top at sunrise.

Soraksan has its moments.

Parts of Gyungju are quite nice.

Parts of Busan are great, some are pretty interesting from a historical perspective, some is pretty bad.

Coastal roads offer great views

Jeju Do has some great vistas.

Goje Do as its great views too.

The list goes on and will depend on each person and what they prefer or like.

As others have said, Namhae is extremely dope if you've got transportation. The hiking is pretty great. The trails outside of the national park are pretty much devoid of people. There are lots of scenic vistas overlooking the ocean, islands, and stuff like that right off of the main road pretty much anywhere you go.

The second largest island in Namhae-gun, Changseon, is pretty neat. It has the look of Jurassic Park but the ambiance of Deliverance. Unlike the fancy ajummas of Gyeongi-do, none of the rice wenches there have any teeth, but they have got the hunchbacks to prove that they've been gleaning millet through the winter ever since dad didn't come home from the war.

Squire, on your scooter trip, I would recommend making a loop around the eastern part of Changseon. There is a cool little island by Dangjeo-ri that you can drive out on that has a little park nobody ever goes to that you can camp out in somewhere if you have a tent or maybe in the abandoned house on the island. The eastern part of Namhae is nice, too, but it's also a lot more developed, which takes away some of the charm in my opinion.

There aren't a bunch of sissy rules like in other places, either. Camp wherever you want, and if you feel like starting a trash-fire in the middle of the road, then do it proudly with righteousness.

I wonder about CNN sometimes. When I access it from Korea, does it give me more Korean stories to choose from? Or is Korea just a big newsmaker?

Korea really is pretty mountainous, so there ARE places of scenic beauty to be found - but not if you don't have a car.

Went on a rafting trip down the Dong River, and some of the scenery was very beautiful. I don't think there is a lot of variety in the landscape here at all, and the beaches suck, but there are plenty of opportunities for quiet forest solitude excursions Smile
