Are you guys cut like Adonis and look like Brad Pitt in his 20's? It's absolutely amazing how critical you guys are on the girl's looks. I'm sure if she were sitting all alone at a bar, most you guys would be trying to get in her pants.

You don't want to offend the locals by giving the foreigner a supermodel girlfriend.

This and this. And what v88 said. I think it's a positive |
Agreed. I would question though how many of the posters above ranking the girl out of 10 actually have a better looking partner. I would guess exactly zero of them. Oh wait, your wife/girlfriend is beautiful to you and that's all that matters, right? Hypocrisy, thy name is........ |

What I don't understand is why she is get the attention for attractiveness while he isn't...what's up with that?
He certainly doesn't appear to be the supermodel type.
If by some chance she were to read this forum...I can only imagine it would be a painful read.
Sometimes the comments written by the faceless cause unintended harm.
If my post appeared to be in that direction, I apologize.
My point was that her attractiveness was more than appropriate for the role she played.

| Anyways, I wonder how much the dude got paid for this commercial? |
Some of the posters on here have mentioned working in this industry...perhaps they can shed some light on the financial rewards of such work. |

I enjoyed the advert and thought the girl was pretty. I liked the fact that a mixed couple were used and thought it was a bit of harmless fun.
I am now curious to see all the other posters' significant others. |

When "Lost" was first on, there was a Korean couple featured in an airport. The guy went into the bathroom and there was a foreigner speaking Korean to the guy. Now, even I, with my horrible Korean language skills, realized that the guy had terrible pronunciation...obviously spoken phonetically.
I showed this clip to several of my classes and all of them burst out laughing. I asked them why they were laughing and of course they said it was because of the pronunciation. I then asked them "Should foreigners laugh at YOU when you speak English?"
Sure got them thinking!!! |

Sorry, she's cute. I have no idea what your scale looks like but it is definitely out of whack.
I think the commercial is funny. It also shows a mixed race couple which is great to see. Samsung also hired an actual Caucasian actor and didn't do what is done in the states for Asian roles (makeup). Kudos to Samsung! |

Are you thinking of some Jerry Lewis flick from the 60's?
How often does that happen nowadays? |

More often than you think.. certain latina's have a slightly asian look about them and will sometimes be cast with a little make-up help to play some asian roles.
but I think more important is that it doesn't look like Samsung hired a Russian and try to pass him off as a North American. |

Happens all the time. Asian actors are almost non-existent in the US. Hollywood would rather recast Asian roles as Caucasians, or use yellowface than hire an actual Asian actor. Different for Asian actresses of course.

Probably the same reason people constantly poke fun at the way Koreans pronounce English.
The ad is a bit off in a "Me so sorry" kinda way. |
So companies like Samsung should do what "people" do huh? We're not talking about "people" we're talking about Samsung. Would you be okay with Apple making a commercial in order to laugh at Koreans pronouncing their L's and R's as they speak to Siri? |

Read my post again before you accuse me of endorsing Samsung's position. |

I don't see how you could watch this ad and not find it offensive.
Even the description is offensive:
외국인의 어색한 우리말 발음까지 척척 알아듣는 삼성 스마트 TV의 기적을 확인하세요!
Check out the miracle of Samsung Smart TV understanding even foreigners' awkward/unnatural pronunciation of our language!
Turn it around. "Check out the miracle of _______ understanding even foreigners' unnatural pronunciation of English!" And then it shows a Korean bumbling through trying to speak English to change a channel because he was watching porn. "Channerr....channerr change-ee!" Would you be okay with an advertisement like that airing on US TV? And keep in mind that watching porn is not openly acceptable in Korean culture the way it is in many parts of the US... |

While I agree with most of your post...not sure this last part is on the mark.
I think it is general accepted that Koreans download more porn than any other country in the world...other threads have commented on this.
To that point...perhaps they are making the point...hey...even foreigners watch porn...just like us.
Koreans know they have poor English pronunciation skills in general, and they watch a lot of porn.
Here is a commercial showing foreigners in that same boat.
While I agree this kind of commercial would get severe backlash in the west...Korea tends to be a bit less PC... refreshingly so at times. |

Yeah, Korea watches more porn than the west...but what do you think the average person's reaction will be when watching the video? Do you think they'll see it as, "Wow, foreigners watch porn just like us!" or "Of course the pervert foreigner is watching porn"? Maybe a bit of both, but I think the majority of Koreans over the age of 30 - people to whom an expensive TV is marketed - would think the latter. I could be wrong, but taken in the context of the rest of the ad, I very much doubt the joke is, "Hey, foreigners are just like us!"
I don't think the lack of PC is refreshing...I guess that's where we differ. I've had enough situations where what I'm saying is being ignored because the person wants to marvel at/mock/correct my Korean instead of actually listening to me. I don't think it's funny, I think it's condescending and annoying. |

You guys are way too sensitive. It's a bit of fun. The guy has been learning Korean for a year. Nobody expects him to be perfect.
Have a look at this:

Not sure we differ on this point...my comment about the PC part was the sexual connotation.
I agree with your language analysis...but in the context of that commercial...it didn't seem so condescending as it might in a real conversation. |
