|
|
"t's expected to be the largest and most powerful typhoon to hit East Asia this summer, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
The arrival of Typhoon Bolaven , which is expected to hit Korea early next week, has set the Korean government into motion to do what it can to prepare the nation for the storm."

If it gets a little closer to the mainland, it might be around CAT 2 strength. Wonder if they would close school with winds howling over 100 MPH |

Exciting. The wind should keep the place nice and cool for a little while at least, and then perhaps when it's over the worst of the summer will be too |

There's another one behind it, but it is forecasted to more westerly as it goes thru the E. China Sea, and is probably going to down grade to a TS.
It's because I'm coming to town Tuesday, LOL! I'll be leaving 1 hurricane in Florida and flying into 2 hurricanes in SK..... |

I've been here 15 tears. I have seen one storm worth mentioning. It lasted about a hour and knocked over a few trees.
Don't get your hopes up for anything exciting next week. |

Uhhuh..
Kompasu was in 2009, it knocked over more than a few trees.. it also caused some mudslides and killed a bunch of people.
Maemi in 2003 85 died, 250,000 evacuated, hundreds of boats destroyed, 1.4 million without power.
Rusa in 2002 killed 89 with winds over 200km/h
Megi in 2004 332 mm rain in 24 hours, 5 dead 2400 homeless
Prapiroon in 2000 killed 46 and caused $6billion in damages
Olga in 1999 destroyed 400 square km of rice paddies, 8500 homes and killed 64
Yanni in 1998 killed 50 people in Korea
Do you just enjoy lying or is it something different? |

When Kompasu hit two years ago, public schools stayed closed for that day,
The path of this one seems very similar and its even a tad bit stronger. If you check surface sea temperature you will see that its equally warm all along its path so it wont weaken rapidly over the yellow sea as Kompasu did.
*edit: actually Kompasu was Cat. 3 at its peak but only Cat. 1 when approached the South Western tip of the peninsula and just a Tropical Storm when passing Seoul.
This one however will be still Cat. 3. when reaching the South-western area. It could cause serious damages there. |

99% of the time I agree with you on this and usually I laugh when the Korean media says a "typhoon" is going to hit Korea when its only a mild tropical storm
this time I'm not laughing, this one has the potential to be a doozy, as of the noon KST advisory from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center at 9AM Tues it has it as a decent cat 3 just off the coast of Mokpo, Remember Katrina was only a high cat 3 when it hit NOLA and they were on the west side
We will be on the east side of the storm which is the bad side.
For once I'm battaning down, I expect Mon night into Tuesday to be a real mess, best advice is get batteries, flashlights some food today, tomorrow is going to be nuts |

Chill out. Don't need your attitude here just letting people know about the storm.
WUnderground which is usually accurate has it at a cat 3 Monday night:

He's completely full of it. As I pointed out above there has been 7 significant storms in the last 15 years (meaning about one every other year, so he'd have to be living under a rock not to notice them) and in fact if you look at the typhoon season listing on Wikipedia, what that works out to is something like 50% of the storms that actually make it to Korea are significant. Most of them don't come up here. About half of the ones that do are just storms or depressions when they make landfall, but the other half usually do significant damage.
If this one doesn't drop to Cat 3, as they only have it dropping to Cat 3 just before it nails us, It will probably be the strongest one in a long time to hit us. That big one from 2003 was a Cat 3 when it made landfall.. You can see videos of that on the internet.
This looks like it'll cut in around seoul and we'll get a pretty big chunk of it there. I'd expect schools closed Tuesday, but you can't be sure. |

Well there goes our fun..they've changed the prediction..now it's looking to be a Cat 1 by the time it gets to Seoul. Moving up the coast it'll drop from Cat 3 to 1. Southern part of the country could still get quite hammered though.
Jeju is probably screwed. |

A direct hit from a category 1 to an area that isn't used to such things is still rather bad; it can easily cause a whole lot of downed power lines since most seem to be above ground in many residential areas. A category 2 knocked the entire Fort Lauderdale metro area out of commission for around 2 weeks back in 05. I'd imagine a category 3 would absolutely pulverize Jeju.
On the bright side, we may get to actually see the stars for a night or so in Incheon. |

2003 was a Category 3 and it hit the south/jeju area I believe.
It's happened before, but it's not a constant threat like say Florida. |
