Quote:
SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - Apple Inc. scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung on Friday as a U.S. jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.051 billion in damages.

Quote:
Brian Love, a Santa Clara law school professor, described it as a crushing victory for Apple: "This is the best-case scenario Apple could have hoped for."

Quote:
Apple's charges that Samsung copied its designs and features are widely viewed as an attack on Google Inc and its Android software, which drives Samsung's devices and has become the most-used mobile software.
Apple and Samsung, two companies that sell more than half the world's smartphones and tablets, have locked legal horns in several countries this year.
Earlier on Friday, a South Korean court found that both companies shared blame, ordering Samsung to stop selling 10 products including its Galaxy S II phone and banning Apple from selling four different products, including its iPhone 4.
But the trial on Apple's home turf -- the world's largest and most influential technology market -- is considered the most important.

Not a surprise, don't Korean companies have a history of copying? Same same or business as usual, but maybe not anymore.

Right, because we all know that Apple invented the touch screen and the rectangle. Rolling Eyes

Relax, get off the rounded rectangle kick because Samesung doesn't have to pay for that. There were enough other things they copied and will have to pay for.

I've got no dog in this fight and don't give a whoop, to tell the truth.

But the whole idea that you can try to claim a rounded rectangle as your own is silly.

That whole idea was only part of a trial that "involved more than a dozen different patents, over 30 allegedly infringing devices and wide-ranging claims on design ownership..."
http://techcrunch.com/2012/08/24/apple-wins-patent-ruling-as-jury-finds-samsung-infringes/?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl2%7Csec1_lnk2%26pLid%3D196998
"Heres a quick rundown of how the jury came down on both of the companies. Remember, there are plenty of devices at play here on Samsungs side alone, theres the Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S, Exhibit, Infuse 4G, Mesmerize, Nexus S 4G, Gem, Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Replenish, Vibrant, plus every carriers version of the Galaxy S II.
■The jury found no infringement by Apple on any of Samsungs utility patents.
■The jury found that Samsung infringed on patents for 381 bounce back scrolling functionality on all devices.
■On the 915 patent, relating to one finger to scroll, two to pinch and zoom navigation, all but three Samsung devices (Ace, Intercept and Replenish) infringed.
■For Apples 163 patent (tap to zoom) all Samsung devices except Captivate, Indulge, Intercept, Nexus S 4G, Transform and Vibrant infringed."

the patent system sucks and is abused by every company every which way. i own an apple phone but anyone with any sense knows multiple scientists or designers independaently can arrive at the same logical conclusions. samsung didnt help themselves though and messed up with the galaxy s. it DID look like an apple device. but patenting bounce back and pinch to zoom is nuts. its shouldnt be allowed.

patent abuse has gone off for ages. energy companies buying patents for efficient energy generators and then locking them away. drug companies keeping cheaper life saving alternatives off the market with patents. dont blame apple. blame the system that allows it to happen.

patents should last a maximum of 2 years.

I read elsewhere that what did Samsung in was an internal document that broke down the iPhone's features and basically stated how they need to make their phone more like the iPhone.

Actually, found it:

I don't really understand the idea of being able to patent something like, for example, touch-to-zoom.

Surely touching the screen as an input method to start an action and zooming in on text are two discrete things that have been used in technology for years - how can you just put the two together and claim a patent?

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm genuinely interested in the copyright law in this case.

At the moment it seems similar to claiming a patent on using a car to, say, deliver pizzas - two distinct processes that just happen to be used together. Any experts here?

They've essentially patented a gesture humans have always used. It's the same gesture you use to enlarge a hole in a paper bag, for example.

I offered pertinent information to the case and you naively believe nobody or me should care or could possibly have a stake(stock) in it Rolling Eyes Do you have anything other than a sit down and shut up?
