Probably the same reason people constantly poke fun at the way Koreans pronounce English.

The ad is a bit off in a "Me so sorry" kinda way.

So companies like Samsung should do what "people" do huh? We're not talking about "people" we're talking about Samsung. Would you be okay with Apple making a commercial in order to laugh at Koreans pronouncing their L's and R's as they speak to Siri?

Read my post again before you accuse me of endorsing Samsung's position.

Read my post before you accuse me of accusing you, and then answer my question. Really though, you sound like you're excusing Samsung whether you know it or would admit.

Actually, if anything I'm accusing the people upset over this who go out and make fun of Korean accents of being hypocrites. I think that obviously is the point of my post. Where's the outrage at the countless times people complain or make fun of Koreans speaking English?

That outrage does not exist steel, because you know how bad Koreans are. Laughing

In fact, the same type of commercial in say Canada or the US but starring a Korean would have been laughed it by the peanut gallery here. Why do you bother trying to debate this with them Steel?

BS. I can only speak for myself but I would be MORE upset by an ad like that because it would be shameful for the US/Canada. And also, while Westerners do face racism here, white people at least also have advantages that Asians don't get back in the States/Canada, so it would be even more offensive from a power/privilege point of view back West.

Doesn't excuse Samsung doing it in Korea. Still xenophobic as heck.

On the offensive scale, this ad is probably a 2- making fun of accent is something that people do, but not something large, powerful corporations ought to be doing. The hypothetical someone brought up involving Apple and Siri is a really appropriate parallel.

The ad is humorous in a way; that kind of humor appeals pretty universally- the porn part. The problem, though, is that this ad does not exist in isolation. There are very few ads in Korea that feature foreigners as "characters", and fewer with mixed race romantic pairings. In most that I can recall seeing, the Western foreigners are sexualized in some way- a Korean hunk with sultry, sexily-clad white girls hanging all over him, or a good-girl Korean gal with a perverted/sex-hound white boyfriend.

Recall this Samsung commercial: http://youtu.be/voVbybivcrY

A professional, pretty Korean gal video chatting with her Western boyfriend- great!... until she sees, in the reflection of his sunglasses, that he's lazing about with a sultry, sexily-clad white girl.

The other qualification for foreigner characters in Korean ads is expressing love for Korea. This ad manages to do both!

The problem is that there's not much balance. There have been a couple ads that feature a sort of positive or normal portrayal of a mixed race couple/romantic pairing, but they are few and far between. What would really blow my mind is seeing a "normal" commercial featuring a mixed race couple- say a stylish, metropolitan couple in one of those only-possible-on-tv Korean flats talking (in Korean) about how smart and wonderful their LG refrigerator is. They could even get the required celebrity in it, as several Korean celebs are married to foreigners.
