It's great, the first 100 times you hear it. Then, after the first week's passed , you want to (or I do at least) bash your head in anytime those opening warped beats bump in just so your earbones break and you'll be spared from another rousing round of Gangnam style.
I will, however, admit that upon first glance, I totally thought that this thread was about a Gangnam style massage. Which, given the video, would be intriguing. |

Its a high quality production.
Certainly distinctly and refreshingly original compared to the dozens of K-pop sings I hear all day.
But its only on the same level as something in the top 20 of the UK or US pop or dance charts.
Ie the west has been churning out stuff at least this good, and often far better, week in week out... for about 50 years now. |

People are acting like this is the first KPop song to have some kind of subversive message...
Heck, the last few years have seen some popular vids with the "zany", jokester, not-quite-hip look compared to the good lookers of BigBang and f(x).
JYP's 'Itaewon Freedom' and Supreme Team's 'Supermagic' are probably the most obvious examples

And of course during the "first wave" of KPop, many of the big songs had socially conscious, often rebellious messages in their lyrics and/or videos.
I wouldn't call it widespread, but the way people are throwing their hands over their heads about this and treating it like some new phenomenon is a bit ridiculous.

Wwwwhhhhat??? There isn't anything original about it except the lyrics. The bassline and lead saw synth melody have been copied in their exact form through the last 15 years in dance/electronica/house/techno music. And the 4:4 house beat is made by an old 909 drum machine. |

True, but that sound hasn't been popular in mainstream hits for very long, so for some it seems new. (Although it's VERY similar to that "Shufflin" LMAO song that came out last year.)
But compared to most K-pop, it is a standout and also somehow hits all the right elements to make it a surprise hit, complete with unforgettable repetitious catchphrase and an odd chubby guy doing a silly dance.
It's the video that really propelled it, with a "What the ___ is this?" zany quality to it, which created a buzz.
Of course, now we know how every K-pop song coming out for the next year is going to try and sound.
"Beep bee dee dee... Apku style!"
"Beep bee dee dee... Sinsa style!"
"Beep bee dee dee... Hongdae style!"
It's hilarious that after all the hype, marketing and grooming of polished teen idols, the chubby guy who doesn't care about his appearance is the one that gets the international hit. Gotta love him for that alone. |

Granted it's better than the other chart fodder, but in the end just as disposable.
Fact that people are paying this much attention to it highlights how impotent the current music scene is. |

Yeah, the basic techno/house sound has been in charts on and off for decades.
I meant the electro-house sound with the annoying bleepy lead sounds suddenly in every TV ad nowadays. That sound isn't new either, but it's currently still in vogue from a mainstream standpoint.
I agree the backing track is nothing special and just like a bunch of other songs, but for making a hit it didn't matter; it's the other shtick that grabbed the attention (and a silly dance helps too).
(But I'll take "Pump up the Jam" over it any day.) |

If there is a message here, it's actually more heavily weighted to "older rich Korean men" rule.
In other words, nothing about this song is subversive, just a lot of funny gags to endear people to the quirks of not-so-attractive/not fit older oppa adjeossi's with money and influence.
