I keep seeing the spelling come up as "hogwan", which is blatantly incorrect.

According to the Revised Romanization:
학원
ㅎ h
ㅏ a
ㄱ g
ㅇ (silent)
ㅝ wo
ㄴ n

In other news, a foreigner is a waygookin (외국인). A foreign country is a waygook (외국). Which is why the other popular EFL forum (waygook.org) has a silly name. (Technically it should be spelled oe-gug-in according to the Revised Romanization but I don't blame anyone for using a more familiar spelling, haha.)

That is all.

should be "hakwon" still. ive been in Pusan nearly 15 years. now, calling "PIFF" "BIFF" makes it even sillier and less attractive. do u know about the Pusan mascot/whatever? his name is romanized as "Bubi". in korean, of course, it's "부비", which, to me, means "booby". /snicker. dont get me started on the "BS" Bank... For the amount of English words that Korea has absorbed into their

Konglish register and the way most of those words have morfed into

completely different meanings from the original English, I'd say

your complaint about the spelling of Hakwon, hogwon, hakwan, hagwon

or whatever is pretty superfluous to say the least.

Hooray for run-on sentences!!! Yes!!

I vote for hawgwanna.

and newbies would be classed as "hawgwannabees".

Hogwan is correct.

The current group of Korean "English experts" aren't qualified to create a system of Romanization for their own language. They don't have the ear for English sound required to transliterate properly.

"Hag" rhymes with "bag" and utilizes the "a" sound found in "bag, cat, hat," etc. This sound does not exist in the Korean language.

"Won" can be "juan" but it can also be "one."

"Hogwan" avoids these problems.

However, it's better to just say "school."

Most of the education in Korea occurs in hogwans, they are Korea's primary source of learning. The government schools have failed and teach next to nothing. They exist as competitive testing centers where students are scored and ranked on material that they've learned elsewhere.

and ...

o as in oh
e as in ee
gug as in lug, hug, rug, jug
in as in sin

oh ee gug in

youbetcha

I don't understand why people use "hogwan"

hog = the "o" sound in "own", not the "o" sound in "on" or "off".
원 = won (We don't say 1,000 wan, but 1,000 won. Come on people.)

It's 학원 (hagwon) not 혹원 (hogwon)

The "g"/"k" debate is not as intense, but usually if you start a word with ㄱ it is "k", inside the word "g"

Examples:

김치 kimchi
김 We called him "Kim Jeong Il" not "Gim Jeong Il"
불고기 We say "bulgogi" not "bulkogi" or "bulgoki" Wink

An exception to this rule (in English at least) is a word like "taekwondo" 태권도

Notice, we don't spell it "taekwando", there is NO "wa".

I rest my case your honor.

"og" exists in English, but your list clearly shows you are looking at the written language in English and not the spoken language in Korean.

We say "harmonica" not "hormonica". A phonetics course might do you well.

"uh" as in hug, rug, lug, sung ... does not exist in Korean.

어 sounds like "aw" in hawk, walk, song, long and hog, dog, log.

You have absolutely no understanding of Korean.

The leader in North Korea was KIM IL SUNG 김일성.

un sound does exist. We can use "eo" or "u" but it can be confusing if we mean ᅥ or ᅮ
