Hey I'd love to hear what people know about living and working in Suwon. How easy is it to make new friends?

Your ability to make new friends has nothing to do with Suwon.

I've never lived in Suwon but I enjoy visiting to walk along the old Hwaseong Fortress city wall. The city itself seems pretty typical for a Korean city--your impressions and work experience will likely have more to do with your particular neighborhood (new and modern or old and run down?) than with Suwon as a whole .

The trip to/from Seoul is very easy, and since Suwon lies on the main rail track it's also easy to get to/from other parts of the country.

Suwon is famous for its trash piles and prostitutes. A woman walking to Anyang once turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back at its magnificent glare. There is a big house shaped like a toilet, but you may not poop in the center of it.

It's a big city, right? I know it has a large subway station on the #1 line. It is south of Seoul but close enough by subway or bus that you can easily spend your weekends in Itaewon, with others, in a drunken stupor.

Lived in Suwon for over 4 years now, never seen the trash piles.

To the OP. Pretty typical Korean city. About a million people, and less than an hour from Seoul. Pretty sizable expat scene, so your ability to make friends is limited only by your own social skills Very Happy

Really?

I went there like a total of 7 times and I've seen so much garbage and vomit. But I guess it's because I go to the nightlife districts.

But yeah some areas are DISGUSTING.... GARBAGE EVERYWHERE.

Hah, 'some' areas. Uh huh. I think you mean ALL areas. Not particularly of Suwon, of Korea. If you think Suwon is dirty, ugly, banal, dull, monotonous and in every notable way exactly the same as every other Korean city of similar size, well, you would be correct.

It's as much of a dump as all other Korean cities--a sizable one. Its main advantage has already been mentioned: it's on the main trunk railway line, which means you can get out of it quite easily. And you'll want to, trust me.

Yo Modernist, your general tone in pretty much every post you make is pretty Anti-Korean. I have to ask, why are you still here? If I hated every minute and everything about my job and the country I lived in, I would leave. Yet you're still here.. you can't be that pathetic that earning $25k a year doing a job you hate in a place you hate is the best thing you have going for you?

I disagree with the above Suwon lover. Suwon is crappy compared to other cities in Korea or at least the ones around it. Seongnam and Anyang are in the same area and leagues nicer. I would take Ansan or Pyeongtaek over it too. They seem less dirty while having more amenities that foreigners like.
