Is drinking in the subway illegal? I couldn't find anything on it.

Yes, CentralCali, I would also like to see some sources.

It's interesting that OP connects his undignified behavior with Itaewon. Even more so, he thinks just being on line 6 is an excuse for poor etiquette by virtue of the fact that is passes by Itaewon....in some way I want to agree.
Yes, taking someones picture without their permission is rude, but people behaving uncivilized don't always deserve to be treated with respect. Smack that phone out of her had or shout something rude to play the part even more.

I've drank beers on the subway before, I'm not proud of myself for my shameful behavior. It kind of makes me feel bad, like the first few times I drank, that's probably why I did it. If I got called out for it I would man up and admit it was wrong. This was pre-smart phone days, when partaking in foolish behavior in public wasn't just asking for it to become plastered all over the internet. I'm not saying people shouldn't do stupid things, just don't get upset when you get caught.

I've never seen any police on the train, just a few soldiers.

And you can buy beer on the train in many countries, and drink on the train. You'd probably get funny stares if you drink out of the buffet car but it's unlikely it'd be anything more than the stink eye.

No, I was just sitting in one of the normal seats. I think the only thing I was doing that could have provoked contempt was drinking a beer, but it was only a 12 oz can and on the line that goes through Itaewon, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Yawn. I gave you the benefit of the doubt after reading the thread about foreigners doing a pedicure on the subway, but you've now proved yourself to be one of the many clowns on this board whose posts don't deserve the time of day. For those who don't remember, this guy claimed to have been in the picture that sparked a debate about foreigners on the subway, only to reveal after several pages of bickering that he was joking.

It's so easy to get a reaction from people here, as you've now proved several times, but I can't help but wonder... why bother? It's the same mentality of immature kids that post all over Youtube, but I assume you're an adult with a degree? The mind boggles.

Can't users like this be banned? It's a waste of everybody's time going round in circles when the OP is only having a laugh.

This obviously never happened.

hmm nothing against drinking on line 6...i recant much of my previous statement. Also they sell beers in most of the little kiosks on the subway platforms (not sure about smrt or seoul metro, but definitely korail is cool)

Oh and if you on line 1~4

I already knew that about lines 1-4. I was pretty sure I wasn't doing anything wrong. Thanks for helping me in putting these naysayers in their places.

Moreover, it's always the apologists who are hooting the loudest. I have been a member of this forum for over a year and have contributed many meaningful posts. I don't know why you guys are calling me a troll. Please show me proof other than my username being the middle row of keys on a qwerty keyboard. Dave Sperling approved it himself, so it must be okay.

Hm, never knew that about line 1. Riding from Suwon to Pyeongtaek and back, I would take things like gatorade or vitamin water and little snacks. Nobody ever said anything, or looked at me funny.

Though I remember once people staring at my wife for taking a bit of warm buttered squid on the train a few years back. She insists its because they all thought it smelled delicious.

Probably cause you were drinking. We saw a bunch of foreigners on line 2 last week with orange juice in one hand and a soju bottle in the other. Some Koreans laughed it off, while others looked disgusted.

Are you really surprised that some people are unhappy about anti-social behavior?

http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=2931544

Lines 1-4 OUTSIDE of Seoul city limits are run by KORAIL. Lines 1-4 inside the city are run by Seoul Metro. 5-8 are run by Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp. So there are three groups (plus line 9, AREX, and SinBundang line) that set the rules.

You can drink on a train - mughunwha, saemaeul, for sure - they sell beer in the dining car. You can buy beer at the train stations. As far as SUBWAY platforms, I haven't looked, but I would not be surprised out in the country on line 1 if you could get it there.

But, give it an honest thought. Of the millions of people who ride the subway, how often do you see average Hong Gil-dong drinking a Cass on the subway? Answer? NEVER. When you do see it in the city, it's always some drunk guy, some punk, some pissed off person who doesn't care about the rules. And then they dump it on people who tell them to cut it out.

Probably the reason the woman got mad is because you said "hajima". That is such a dick thing to say. You say that to your dog. You DON'T say that to people who take your photo on the subway, especially considering A) she's a stranger, B) it's legal to take a photo of anyone in the public sphere. If you don't want her to do it, you would use the full form "hajimaseyo". You're not saying "I respect you" with that form - you're simply asking her not to do it. BUT, with hajima, you ARE saying "I am being disrespectful."

You totally deserved whatever you got. Drinking on the subway IS against the rules -eating or drinking anything is, although if it's benign, it's usually ignored. But especially, drinking beer and then being rude - you deserved it.

That's not entirely true. if you take a photo of someone that could cause shame or is sexual in nature it's a criminal act punishable by up to 5 years in jail or a 30 million won fine.

It's only a crime if you use that photo to shame/embarrass them, and even then there area few standards that have to be met (even in Korea). Simply taking the photo itself is not a crime.

As far as sexual is concerned, taking a photo up someone's dress is illegal because what's up the dress is not in the public sphere. If you're having an orgy in the park, I think you have bigger worries than photographing it. Wink

You're right, but in general, general everyday happenings in public are legal to photograph.

Legal or not, it's nasty.

http://trainpigs.com/

This is a site that shows train pigs in the US, but it's just as nasty here as there. Maybe there's a similar site here.

No, it's not and your information is completely wrong. You don't have to use it at all, you simply have to take it.

Simply taking it enough. Distribution and use is covered via the "or"

http://metropolitician.blogs.com/scribblings_of_the_metrop/2008/08/photo-law-card.html

The Metropolitician wrote this a few years back. The card he uses regarding the law and photos is quite clear (he speaks Korean and, if anyone has met him, knows he is an incredibly intelligent guy) about what the law says. I keep a version of this card with me when I take photos.
