I don't mind about not getting another job in Korea, I'll hunt in Thailand if it comes to it. |
If you want to hunt in Thailand for a job - do it now. Now is the time that jobs here in Thailand start to open up. |

Thanks for the replies guys
One more question:
Can I book a return flight to Thailand. but just not return. Assuming I DON'T have the foreigner card? Will they question it? Can you go on 'holiday' after like two months?
I don't mind about not getting another job in Korea, I'll hunt in Thailand if it comes to it. |
Labor law says you are free to quit any time.
Labor law says you cannot be coerced into working.
You are free to leave the country any time PROVIDED you are not charged with a criminal offense (in which case the police will hold your passport to prevent your departure).
You do not need to pay for a two way ticket (unless you plan to return).
You do not need to make excuses at passport control when you leave (they could care less).
You do not need an excuse to leave (passport control may ask if you intend to return (on the same visa) - just say no and they will cancel your visa/status of sojourn- allowing you to get a new job if you want).
Immigration doesn't care about your "return" flight.

The only thing to worry about if you leave before you get your ARC is that it might not cancel your E-2 visa, so if you want to come back to Korea to work somewhere else you'd have to wait until the term of your current E-2 expires.
Also, you can apply for your own ARC. In fact, it's in your best interest to do so ASAP because it's a lot harder to sort out things like your bank account, health insurance, cell phone, etc. before you have it. The only thing you need from your employer is a copy of his business license. Ask your boss for it, explain why you need it, and take matters into your own hands. |
Apply for your own ARC? Not UNTIL you've had the medical check. There seem to be some lucky posters around here who live in areas where Immigration does their best not to set up roadblocks but I have no heard of any foreigner who can get their ARC without presenting the medical check. Maybe you just forgot to mention that. |

There isn't really even any rush to leave. You COULD go to immigration and tell them that you quit. They'll give you 2 weeks to leave the country.
If your boss is doing something illegal or contrary to your contract, then you can just go to the labor board and report the guy. If the LB agrees with your case, they'll let you leave that school and transfer your visa to another employer. Much easier than running AND your boss goes on file at the LB. If you've worked a few weeks and he doesn't pay you for it, you can go to the LB again and have them sort it out. You can do that even while you're working at your next job. |

You're right, he needs the medical check, but he doesn't need his boss' help to take care of that either. The last two times I did it I didn't ask for or get any help doing it. The only thing he needs from his boss to get the ARC is a copy of school's business license.
If the OP doesn't already know the full procedure for getting his ARC he can ask here or call the Immigration hotline (1345). |
