So, I picked one page and they spent more time than I had expected looking up words. I am wondering if this is a happy medium. They read a page and then we go over it.
How much time do you allow/expect students to read? |
Try to get them away from looking up words. Spend some time in class on strategies for reading

To gauge the time needed for reading time it in class. Give them a number of pages, tell them to just read through it (no dictionaries, no checking with friends)to get the main idea and see how long it takes. Use that for a standard.
I give my students a half a chapter to read early in the course and see how long it takes. That tells me how much class time to allow. |

That's is an excellent idea. In my case, they have one page, two columns like a newspaper.
I am assuming you would give more time for the chapter if the vocabulary was at the same level of difficulty.
In my case, two classes so far have used 15-20 minutes. If you give your class more time, then are you giving them 30 minutes?
If you are only giving them 10 minutes, then the book they are using must be more difficult than their level. In my case, I can't change that, but I can give them other material. It seems like this book they are using is a joke, but at the same time it helps bring us together.
Everyone has the book. Everyone paid for the book. Everyone can work at their own pace to try to understand it. If they don't know the vocabulary, we go over it in class. So, I give them other words that are easier to understand (deer instead of fawn). In this case they don't have to look up all the words. |
