Inspired by Van Islander's thread about the provinces ...
At present there are 20 national parks in South Korea. They are:
Bukhansan
Byeonsanbando
Chiaksan
Dadohae Haesang
Deogyusan
Gayasan
Gyeongju
Gyeryongsan
Hallasan
Hallyeo Haesang
Jirisan
Juwangsan
Naejangsan
Odaesan
Seoraksan
Sobaeksan
Songnisan
Taean Haean
Wolchulsan
Woraksan
At present, I've been to exactly half. My goal by the end of this year is to get to at least five more.
The best ones I've been to: Jirisan (the three/four trek across Esat-West was one of the best things I've ever done), Songnisan (very quiet and pleasant, Beopjusa is amazing), Naejangsan (really nice, but crowded in autumn), Wolchulsan (a strange looking mountain and small park, the smallest in Korea I think).
I though Sorak was gorgeous but so did the eight hundred thousand other folks there at the time. It's a wonder the mountain still stands. The isalnds of Dadohae Haesang are quite nice as well.
And as for Bukhansan, well, let's just say it affords you pleasant views of the Seoul haze. And WHATEVER YOU DO, DON"T GO THERE ON A SUNDAY.
Anyone else have any preferences/highlights? |

Fully agree, i had climbed Mt. Fuji and a few others before but it was one of the highlights of my life. We started in Jurye at sea level and went went -) east. Very tough for such a relatively small mountian. Met some fantastic Koreans up there as well.
I've been to 7 of them. |

Why not? The National Parks in Korea are the best things about the place. Yes, they can be a zoo, but you just have to be selective about when you go. |

I just don't like nature. Full of bugs and lacking in air conditioning (although I'm sure that Koreans will find a way to bring in air conditioning).

Right now the azaleas are going off in Jirisan N.P.
The best place to check them out is Baraebong Peak.
I set out to hike the highest peak in Jirisan about 2 weeks ago. I got about 1/3 to the top and found out that the trail was closed. It won't open for another 2 weeks or so. |

did you do the whole trek?
i've been thinking about taking a stab at it.
how difficult was it?
You start at Hwaeomsa Temple and then cover the entire park right? |

Seoraksan in winter was fantastic. Stay at one of the seaside towns overnight, then start in the morning and hike up.
I had a great time, and even though it snowed overnight, the walk up to the
"Rocking Boulder" is rather warming.. :)
Fantastic time, and I'd do it again if I had the chance.. :)

Yup. I started at Hwaeomsa (West) up to Banyabong then across the spine of the mountain. Came down all the way East at Daewonsa. Of course, you could do the hike in reverse order.
I did in the summer and it was HOT but no rain, which was good. Took me about three and a half days, staying at various huts and shelters along the way. I did it with a friend, which I wholeheartedly recommend, as it's more fun. It's was pretty tough in parts, but not too bad if you're reasonably fit (and I smoke!!). All in all, an AWESOME experience, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in hiking. |

yeah, that was the hike i was thinking about doing.
did you lug your food or buy it in the shelters? |

That's just A-C of the parks I've been to... I've been to somewhere around 80-90% of the parks in the country. I spent my entire childhood with my dad driving around the country. We even have those little letter size brochures for each and every one of the parks... along with corresponding family pictures and all. We have an actual room in our house that is devoted just to holding all the memories from these trips. |
