I can help but notice there has been a big increase in people getting canned lately. I'm in touch with a few local hagwons myself and the firings have been relentless this year. One school with 13 teachers, 6 were fired this year. It's like Koreans suddenly discovered they could fire people and can't get enough of it.
What about you? You heard of a lot more firings this year from your connections, not just stuff you've read on Dave's? |

I would expand your query to include not renewing contracts. If they don't have the students then they don't need the teachers. Are they hiring replacement teachers or are they just downsizing?
What would you do if you owned a school with declining enrollment? I would keep the best teachers and get rid of the ones who gave me any problems no matter how small. I expect to hear more of people who say things like, "sure I was late a few times but that was months ago". |

IIRC, I read some article about foreign teachers being let go at public schools from middle school and up? |

I think this is a Hasty generalization. The sample size is small plus localized.
Like I have noticed recently a big increase in hiring in my area lately. In the last month, there has been 4 new teachers. The economy must be doing great!
Plus some other fallacies can seen. Like how bad news stands out versus good/general news. Confirmation bias?. People notice firings more then job hirings. If you read Dave's all the time... you would think all teachers are getting fired, co-teachers are abusing them, and all the male teachers have Asian fever. Usually what is posted here is negative or people needing help aka distress.
Plus, firings happen.
Another thing missing is .... why? Maybe the people fired where bad employees, businesses was downsizing. Some details are needed. |

It seems I'm appealing to the wrong crowd here. Most people on Dave's seem to 1) not live in Korea 2) not be working in education 3) not be able to read my question probably.
I guess the hagwon people are too busy working to have time to hang out on a forum. |

I think the OP may possibly have a point.
I worked at a hagwon called Reading Town several years ago and it had quite a few teachers. Nobody got fired and things were very professional and normal for the most part.
This past year, I worked at Wonderland Anyang. A Korean teacher was fired in March. By the end of March, an American female was threatened to be fired over something she didn't even do. The boss told her, "It's an awkward situation since your contract ends in May." An Australian guy pulled a midnight runner by April 9th and I pulled a runner on the April 11th election day. Another American guy flew home for a month two days later. The American female probably had a lot of job security at that point, being the only foreign teacher remaining in a school with a large number of students. Even the cook of ten years was fired, replaced by the boss, the boss's sister, and the front desk lady.
At the school where I am now, I'm the only foreign teacher and the one I'm replacing was fired at the nine month mark. |

9 month mark is about right.
They get enough time out of the teacher, but still get to save the
final bonus and air-ticket. They also can't get caught in the 11th month
firing thingy. White faces are a dime a dozen it seems.
Glad I left when I did. |

You mean there are many posters on this site who are not teachers? I'm shocked, shocked to find gambling here. |

I hear you Sloth, but does Thai have a large Thai-American population that makes up the majority of teachers there? Most of the people on this board are Korean-American and they can't help but take every slight against Korea as being a personal attack against them. |
Just a few days ago. |

I don't see how a Korean-American doesn't fit into the three categories I laid out. |
