| So it seems nobody knows anything. Thanks guys. I already know jobs are disappearing. I can see that in the government statistics. I just wanted to get a sense of how people are experiencing it on the ground. |
So you've already got a decision in your head - why post then? Ah, to hear others chime in - well, that's proving that there are mixed opinions/experiences on it.

| In 2010 there were 23,600 on E2. Today there is 22,100. There's been a net loss of 1,500 jobs for E2 in the past two years. |
Wow, two years of history. Lots of depth there. Why not take the past 10 years and see how it looks? Also, as 12ax7 has pointed out, look at the stats for other teaching professions/visas.

It's likely this is being made up the increase in numbers of F4 and F6.
People on F4 went from 69,000 in 2010 to 171,000 today. Although its hard to know how many of them are teaching since the government counts them as being Korean. |
This is very hard to say. Obviously, we don't know what all of those F4s are doing, nor do we know what PRs are doing. I will say that that I've known tons of ppl that came here, taught, got married, and switched visas... yet still continue to teach. They're simply not on E2s any more.
I'm still waiting on your sourcing for what this board is made up of, though. You say that MOST of the posters here are Korean America... by ll means, back that up. Because I see you chiming in with some pretty funny assumptions... and as soon as people point out the flaws in it, you get all defensive.

Some quick stats pulled from a blog

While I was looking into this, I decided to dig up E-2 visa statistics as well:
2000 - 6,414
2002 - 10,864
2004 - 11,344
2005 - 12,439
2006 - 15,001
2007 - 17,721
2008 - 19,771
2009 - 22,642
2010.6 - 23,600 |
But as mentioned before, a reduction in E2s not necessarily reflective of a huge rise in firings. Contracts could simply not be renewed. |

It may seem that way...but only to you.
Some people know things...they shared...some agreed...some disagreed.
You're welcome. |

| This thread has consisted of 30 posts. Only three of those posts attempted to answer my question. Four of the posts were mine. So 23/30 posts here were just people trolling me. |

I can help but notice there has been a big increase in people getting canned lately. I'm in touch with a few local hagwons myself and the firings have been relentless this year. One school with 13 teachers, 6 were fired this year. It's like Koreans suddenly discovered they could fire people and can't get enough of it.
What about you? You heard of a lot more firings this year from your connections, not just stuff you've read on Dave's? |
Do you know the difference between statistically significant and anecdotal? |

Do you?
Either answer my original question or shut up. |

The English hagweon that is next to my hagweon had been bankrupt for a month. All the K-teachers and the 2 remaining NETs (one was from NZ) were fired before it got closed. And I found out that that English hagweon turned into a Chinese hagweon. |

But, but... you said..

Just a few days ago. |
Those four factors are not mutually exclusive. I don't see your point. |

My point is that he seems to enjoy making assertions about the make up of this board... and has yet to back any of it up. His assertions fit whatever agenda he's got that day, but I've yet to see any facts that support them.
When asked, he side-steps.
If I was to say that this board was full of angry Middle Eastern women, who are mad that they were fired because of their insistence on wearing a headscarf, and I was to use that to further my argument that Korea doesn't recognize Muslim rights - I'd expect ppl to call me on it. |

There have been cram schools in Korea for hundreds of years, and I would imagine that over that period of time a considerable number have closed their doors due to bankruptcy. |

Why are dinking on this guy for answering my question? Did he say his experience was the end-all be-all? One anecdotal story doesn't mean anything. But a hundred or a thousand? Then you have a trend. Then you can actually make a substantive point. |

I've already answered your question: E2s becoming E1s.
And, no. Still anecdotal evidence.
When your boss, and the bosses of all your friends, stop paying you like it happened to my friends and I in early 1998 when the poop hit the fan, and people are pulling a runner left and right as a result...that's a trend. |
