I haven't partied there much, but I'm entertaining friends from the states and we're looking to avoid the dance/techno/house music they have at clubs. just looking for good old hippity hop.
my research sucks, but this is what i've got so far.
Helios: good hip hop, lots of stuff that was popular in the early 2000's, geared more towards the english teachers and GI's, lotsa cute girls.
UN Club: loud, ear-shattering hip hop, but still good stuff. tons of GI's, lots of dudes, so lotsa fights.
King Club: old as hell club still around since the 80's, dead before midnight, tons of dudes on the prowl, girls come in to pick up foreign dudes.
i'm big into the early 2000-hip hop, so leaning towards Helios. nelly, DMX, 50, outkast, akon, sean paul, luda...love it! |

I am not much a techno / house guy.
Was only able to find one club that suited my tastes last year in Busan (Foxy)
Hoping Seoul will have more options for me this go around. |

Check out Boombar, down the road from the Hamilton Hotel. It's attached to the Macaroni Market.
They charge 20K/head and have a dress code which keeps the crowd pretty upscale, and drinks are a bit pricey, but the vibe in there is great. They usually play 90's and 00's hip hop stuff like you mentioned. |

as mentioned boombar is good, but expensive (which isn't a bad thing; keeps out the shady folk).
venue also does old school hiphop on sunday nights. more 90s rather than early 00s stuff though. |

In Itaewon? There are a couple of good options.
Club Able (used to be Volume) has just reopened. From what I gather they haven't changed anything but the name. The same thing can be said for Hub/Rococo, which is closed AGAIN for "renovations." Those are the biggest venues in the area (for now haha...BIG development underway )
The alley behind the Hamilton Hotel has a bunch of places. B One is kind of the first venue to only play house. It's been around for over 6 years and is busy every night after 11ish. They start a little deep then bang it out until late.
LUV Superlounge plays deep tech house. Thu-Sat are decent.
MYSTIK is kind of a "hipster house" spot...very fashionable crowd but very small.
Globe Lounge is a mixed bag but is usually fun on the weekends with a younger crowd.
Glam Lounge is ultra-swank...deep house with high prices and a very trendy crowd
Club Mute is in the same building as Glam...open on weekends and plays tech house.
BricX plays house music, but they're usually not busy enough to get a real party going.
50b has more of a minimal feel to it, but does have some good parties.
Venue is an underground spot...they do play house, but mostly disco-ish kind of stuff.
All these places play house, but for "dancing" your best bets would be LUV, Mute, Able, B One, and Globe.
All these places are like 2 minutes walking distance from each other, with the exception of Able which is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the street and around the corner at the Crown Hotel.
But anyway, like I said...the new development is going to give all these places a run for their money. |

seems like a few years ago sasha, laurent garnier, digweed, guy j, jimmy van v etc came through and now there's no one I can find that plays good untz untz. Is partyluv still the place to find listings? |

There have been some really, really big festivals this year. The UMF was totally stacked. Carl Cox, Tiesto, Skrillex, John Digweed, etc.
Partyluv is still pretty much the only game in town in terms of web info, unfortunately. Big names still come, but mostly to Ellui and Octagon. Most of the big clubs have kind of realized that K-clubbers aren't that tuned in to the international scene and just kind of migrate to "trendy" places no matter who is playing, and have cut back a lot on the international DJs. |

ah that's unfortunate. I did get the sense that most of the crowd wasn't really clued up to the music when I saw some of the foreign DJs.
I just wish there was one place that brought in a top foreign DJ at least once a month.
Know any local DJs who play good house/prog/techy stuff a la Luke Fair/Diggers/Hernan/Howells? The few I've seen have been a bit too "big-tuney" for my tastes. |

Luv and Mute in Itaewon seem to have a bit more of a refined music policy. The DJs there take their music pretty seriously and don't really play any of the top 40/Beatport stuff. It's mostly tech house, though...which can often fall sort of flat as it just rolls along through the whole night. |
