Does anyone have recent info on how long the CRC is taking? I just sent mine off (arrived today in US) for the upcoming uni hiring season. I am going to contact my congress rep's office to see if I can speed it up, but I am curious if there are fresh turnaround times out there. Thanks!

As soon as I sent it off, my bank notified me of a security breach and they needed to change my expiration date. I sent an email but no response. Not too worried because I have until November.

Submitted my CBC on 8/10, no charge yet. Does anyone know when I will actually need it by? I'm worried that I won't get it on time, yet nervous that I might get it too soon since it's only valid for 6 months and I am applying to start w/ Epik in February/March 2013.

I think you will need it by the opening date of the app (end of sept). Its a first come first serve basis so those with everything on hand will be taken first.

Same boat, gl!

Thanks for the response, Jeremy! I just received an e-mail from Epik stating that you do not need the documents until you pass the interview, which is when they begin the documentation collection process. I guess that buys a little bit of time! Good luck to you as well Smile.

Why do we call our Congressmen(and women)? Can they really speed up the process? What are some speedy alternatives to the standard process? I have been told by some recruiters uslegalization.com is a good way to go, but where do I go from there? Is this the proper page for what we need https://www.uslegalization.com/korea/ ?
My gf and I are on the verge of submitting our forms! Very confused and excited!

Yes, they can. But I think it's only if you are legitimately in a time crunch. But certainly give it a try. Especially if you have reason to believe it's not going to be ready (with apostille) by the time of your interview.

Yes. And it will be best if you have it (the CBC) and all your docs ready before the interview or certainly by the time you find out you were accepted so you can mail everything out ASAP. I'd passed my interview and was penciled to be positioned in Incheon, but I had to wait another 4 weeks for the CBC and consequently got positioned way out in the sticks in the southernmost part of Korea.

I'd try to have that CBC ready at the time of the interview, but with enough time on its six month window to still be valid when your visa is processed in March.

Just ran into another question...
I am working with several recruiters, and regarding the background check one recruiter said
"When ordering the FBI check, please make sure you request the NOTARIZED one."
and another said
"Draft a letter that asks the FBI to issue a 'pre-authenticated' record check"
does this mean the same thing? Is a notarized check from the FBI the same thig as a 'pre-authenticated' check?
Thanks!

Um...by the words used, no they aren't the same thing. But what your first recruiter might have meant was "authenticated" (by the FBI), not "notarized". In which case they both would have meant the same thing.

If you want your CBC to be apostilled by the Department of State (DOS) in DC, you want to request to the FBI when you send in your fingerprints to have the CBC authenticated. That way, the DOS can put an apostille on the CBC. (I think the request is moot now, because I was told when I called the FBI office that all the CBCs are authenticated.)

If, however, you're going to try and get your state's Secretary of State (SOS) to give you the apostille, the you would take your CBC to a notary public to get it notarized. I'd be careful with this option as many states will not apostille a federal document. And if you're applying for programs like EPIK, they might not accept a state apostille.

If you look at page 69 of the E-2 regulations sticky, look at about the 5th post down. It explains the process. (He was sending the fingerprints from Korea, so don't mind that part.)

I'm going through this now, so I'd like to offer what I have found through phone calls to the FBI and talking to the office in my state that issues apostilles (this is for Americans). I'm renewing for the third year and I need to submit both my apostilled diploma copy and my apostilled FBI check because my visa expires after 1/1/2011.

An FBI check can be done from here, but give yourself a lot of time (like 12 weeks) [<--shorter now] and plan to spend a bit of money sending things FedEx because you want to be able to track it! http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/background-checks/background_checks has all the forms you will need. There are links on the right side of the page. Make a few copies of the Standard Fingerprint Form to take with you to get fingerprinted in case one of them gets smudged. I went to a police station here and they did the prints for free.
The above website also contains the address of where you need to send the fingerprints and application once you have completed them. It is suggested to send them FedEx or DHL so that you can track them. Also, make sure to request that the copy of your background check is authenticated by the FBI so that you can send it to the US Dept of State for an apostille. Explicity state this on the application to save yourself the delay.

Obtaining an Apostille on Your FBI Background Check
Once you have received a copy of your background check, it then needs to be forwarded to the US Department of State Office of Authentications. This is the only office that can do it- your FBI check cannot be apostilled at the state level because it is a federal document, so you must mail or hand deliver your document to the Authentications Office. The FBI will not send your background check to another federal office.

US Dept of State Authentications Office
[email protected]
phone: 202-647-5002
fax: 202-663-3636
15 day turn-around time for mailed in documents.
Fee: $8 per document- check or money order to US Dept of State. Credit cards can only be used for walk-ins.
Walk-ins: 7:30-11am M-F, 15 documents per day only.

U.S. Dept of State Authentications Office
518 23rd St NW
SA1 Columbia Plaza
Washington, DC 20520

Diploma Apostille
You need to make a photocopy of your diploma to have apostilled, as Korean immigration will not return documents submitted. This procedure will not necessarily need to be done in the state where your diploma was issued, but check with the state you plan to have it done in to make sure. The reason you can get the notarized copy in a state different from the one it was issued is that the notary is not certifying that you did the work to obtain the diploma, they are simply certifying that the copy is a true copy of the original document. You will need to have a notarized photocopy made and most states have a certification form that needs to be completed and attached by the notary. Once you have the notarized copy, then take it to the appropriate office for the apostille.
Heres a link that has the location of the offices for each state that provide apostilles.

When you submit your fingerprints to the FBI include a note that states:

"Please provide an FBI seal and signature from a division official for the purpose of obtaining a federal apostille."

Sent: August 3, 2012
FBI Received: August 6, 2012
Charged Credit Card: September 4 or Sept. 5, 2012
Search completed: Sept. 6, 2012
Returned: Sept. 11, 2012

Basically, it took me just one month- not including the time it took to return the results back to me.
I also used tracking- that makes a big difference because you are able to know when they received your request and that they did get it.

^ wow, thank you so much for posting that. I sent mine around a week or so after yours and I'm still waiting for them to charge to my cc. Hopefully it'll be happening soon.

We didn't have to enclose an envelope for them to mail the results back to us, correct??

You only do that if you're having them FedEx it back to you and/or you want it tracked.

But, no, you didn't have to.
