OP,

First take your CELTA and DELTA right off your resume. Korean professors and university administrators don't know what it is.

I was sitting in front of the search committee at an interview a few years ago and told them I had a CELTA / RSA TESOL certificate which was met with pretty much blank stares. One prof said that he'd thought he'd "...heard about it." English Literature (mainly Shakespeare) = teaching English in Korean universities. Applied Linguistics - what's that?

Like the poster above said, if you want your CELTA and DELTA recognized, you need to stay in Europe or head to South America. Asians typically don't know what these TEFL teacher certs. are, what they involve or, even if they do, offer any extra compensation for holding them.

Not completely true. While not as well recognized in Korea, Japan, or China, many parts of SEA do recognize CELTA and DELTA qualifications, and have a good understanding what it is.

But you are exactly right about korea, they generally have no clue. shocking, i'm sure you are completely right that seoul BC only teaches young kids. However, I've seen BC posts in vietnam that are exclusively for adults, so it depends if the OP is dead set on Korea or not.

Hey all,

Wow, didn't realise people were still responding to this! I've not looked on here for a while because a couple of weeks after my OP I was interviewed for and offered two uni jobs in Seoul, so I took the best-paid, best-hours one, and here I am! I arrived just over a week ago and am loving it so far.

Regarding DELTA - yeah I kinda knew it wasn't recognised here, and I accepted that. I had a getting-to-know-you meeting with the Director of my department this week and it was a bit of a kick in the guts when she said 'DELTA - is that some kind of 'online tefl' course?'. The urge to scream that it's the highest teaching qual going for English teachers (in the UK at least) was unbearable. But I told her what it was, how it was assessed, the benefits I got from it, and she made a note, so maybe she's going to look into it and learn a bit more about it. Fingers crossed, one uni at a time, we can spread the Delta word! Razz

Thanks to everyone who posted on here with advice, it was really helpful and encouraging during the application process. Now I've got a new flat to move into and need to buy furniture... Very Happy

Congratulations Kimba!

I'm glad to hear that everything worked out for you, good to hear that you were able to figure everything out, especially from abroad. I've heard great things about the curriculum of the DELTA, so even if your department head/boss doesn't know its value, I'm sure what you learned in taking the course will be invaluable.

Best of luck with your new job!
