I have yet to meet a Korean who enjoys being forced to get wet because someone else took their umbrella, nor have I met a Korean who enjoyed having to buy another one or receive a crappy one in compensation for their nice one.

I bought a very nice British made Brigg �Cherry� - pure silk (Cherry Wood) for around $800 in my last year in Korea. It never left my side. Never. Leave it at the door with all the Chinese made cheapo's? Never, not my British baby.
If only the American umbrella industry would take a cue from the honorable and wonderful British people. Sigh!
An umbrella is something you will need for the rest of your life. Invest in a good one now, and you will always be proud to use it, and it will most likely never leave your side. Unless you're just plain stupid. heh. |

Oh my god, $800 for an umbrella! You are such a fop! I would steal that the moment you left it by a door. You'd better take an umbrella like that to the bathroom with you, even at the risk of damaging the finish.

I am glad that somebody here has some perspective. Every Ryan Hamburger thinks he is an expert on everything in Korea right down to umbrella sharing because he took Asian Studies 201 back at Louisiana state, but some of us here have actually been around. |
'It's the culture' is the biggest cope out. Prior to the industrial revolution it was culturally acceptable for men to discriminate against women in the workplace. If you want to defend umbrella theft, which most younger koreans i have asked about it agree it is, just say 'it's an attitude of sharing posessions and if you buy a $50 umbrella your a dumba**.'
But perhaps its easier to ride above the clouds on your high horse. |

I don't think it is theft in the traditional sense of the word though. People aren't going around specifically to steal umbrellas or even trying to profit off of them. It's some weird vague, half-sharing, half-theft that is going on it seems. Maybe akin to dumpster diving? |

No where close. Dumpster diving has agreement on both parts. One party agrees to throw something away, the other decides that it may be of some use. In the case of umbrellas or shoes, there is no agreement. The ppl leaving them at the entrance are doing so with the expectation of using them when leaving.
There was a case a few years back of a guy who was busted stealing shoes. The police went to his place, and found thousands of them.
He was charged.
There was no cultural sympathy for him. |

Umbrellas and shoes aren't in the same category.
I talked about this a bit more with a coworker, and at least in our fair small town, it's kinda like a "give a penny, take a penny". It's not theft if you leave an umbrella in, and you don't have much of an expectation of retaining it. beyond having an umbrella. It's not like shoes.
As I've said though, this could totally be different in a big city where such an action would probably be outright theft. |

I have had one stolen but it was quite cheap so didnt really care. I have also been given 3 umbrellas in the street by random people who saw that I was getting wet and took pity on me. One old ajosshi forced it into my hand make me take it even after I declined it several times, maybe he had just robbed it  Who knows either way I am up 2 umbrellas since arriving and have not stolen anything ! |
