I have had one stolen but it was quite cheap so didnt really care. I have also been given 3 umbrellas in the street by random people who saw that I was getting wet and took pity on me. One old ajosshi forced it into my hand make me take it even after I declined it several times, maybe he had just robbed it Who knows either way I am up 2 umbrellas since arriving and have not stolen anything ! |
Damn, you probably have my umbrella right now... give it back lol |

This never happened to me in the states, maybe because I'm just more naturally paranoid there, but I swear ever since I came to this country I've had my umbrella stolen like 3 times now. Once at a restaurant. Once at a gathering. Latest time was at my school. Sometimes they do a "swap" like my nicer one for their shitty one. Other times they just leave me high and dry (or wet rather).
Is it just me?
I think I'm just gonna use a small one from now on so I am forced to carry it everywhere. |
I bought a very nice British made Brigg Cherry - pure silk (Cherry Wood) for around $800 in my last year in Korea. It never left my side. Never. Leave it at the door with all the Chinese made cheapo's? Never, not my British baby.
If only the American umbrella industry would take a cue from the honorable and wonderful British people. Sigh!
An umbrella is something you will need for the rest of your life. Invest in a good one now, and you will always be proud to use it, and it will most likely never leave your side. Unless you're just plain stupid. heh. |
Oh my god, $800 for an umbrella! You are such a fop! I would steal that the moment you left it by a door. You'd better take an umbrella like that to the bathroom with you, even at the risk of damaging the finish.
And I would use your fetish-idol as a lamp shade if I ever stole it! |
Yes, if anyone ever tried to take from my hands I would stab them in the heart with the tip. Fop. |

| asdfghjkl, why stop at umbrellas? You could also help yourself to a nice upgrade in shoes. Hey, they're just parked there unguarded. Must mean they're public property. |

What the mentally challenged poster with the size 12 shoe size doesn't get is that there are all kinds of people in this world, some have much more money than others. How we choose to spend our money is our own business. Here's a hint: A nice umbrella is not the only expensive item I own.
So go take a hike and mind your own, get yourself some health insurance and start thinking about your future. Now get back to class monkey teacher, keep on hoofing it with those size 12s to catch that bus dude. Have a good weekend. |

| When I lived in Japan I was told it was considered "borrow" and they didn't think of it as stealing, because they would leave the umbrella in another bin at a different place when they finished using it. Maybe it's the same concept here? |

Just out of curiousity, what is your net worth and how much do you make in a year? I am just curious what echelon I should be in before buying an $800 umbrella. It seems like there is a hairline between being a sassy debutante and a silly fop, and I want to know how to be stately and regal like you. Surely if you are willing to brag about your luxury umbrella, then you should be okay with revealing your superior financial situation to a mere peon like me m'lord. |

I don't know, if someone wants to invest in something that they're going to hang on to for years, it's their choice. If I didn't lose umbrellas (not by leaving them in bins, but by forgetting them in taxis and such) I'd get something really well made for a few hundred. Not 800, but I'd still get something nicer than what I've got now.
This one's gorgeous, but I just can't do it, because I know that I'd lose it:

funny you mention. mine was stolen this morning. not a fun surprise when i had to walk to school in bolaven weather...i think stealing an umbrella is one of the biggest dick moves, plain and simple. you know when you do that you are leaving another person to get drenched. and that person had the foresight to bring an umbrella.
that asjfka person is joking, right? not stealing isn't exactly the rude western concept you're making it out to be there chief |
The whole fact that you'd even call it stealing shows your cultural bias. This is completely lost on you guys and probably not something that a lot of foreigners can understand, so I don't even see the point in trying to explain myself if you can't overcome your prejudices. |
You mean like the way certain backpacker hostels and cafes have bookshelves where people leave one book and take another? Yeah, there's no way 'foreigners' can grasp a concept like that.
Next time I'll be sure to draw from the communal pool of umbrellas. I'm sure that will go down well, and I'll get kudos for my appreciation of Korean culture. |
