It is not right from YOUR perspective.
For that bar or pub or club owner's perspective it is pretty much the only manageable solution. |
It's a slippery slope from there... |
Oh well, just let them do it your way, decrease their profits, increase their headaches, and eventually close the doors on the establishment.
That's a great solution.
All in the name of some Westernized perspective of "spreading equality".
I wonder sometimes why certain people even continue to live here, since they apparently have so many grievances with the culture.
Go figure. |
Where's this "so many grievances"? I'm saying that one particular thing is bad. There are plenty of things that are bad where I'm from, yet I never said that I hated my county. I don't hate Korea. I hate the policy of excluding people based on ethnicity.
Don't put words in my mouth. |

It can be yes but again, unless you have been in that bar owner's shoes, you do not know now do you?
Let me take you back to that Busan bar...
Who paid for the heavy damages to the bar? The owner.
Did the GIs get any sort of punishment? Not really.
Whose business was hurt as clients avoided the place for a while?
It may be slippery but sometimes it is the sane choice for a business owner. |
The owner should have had insurance. A few of my friends own bars here. Fights happen. The bars are western bars. The fights are usually caused by Korean guys, who don't make the majority of the clientele. They don't ban all Koreans from coming in. They kick instigators out. |

He did have insurance!
Sadly it did not cover all the damage, nor the loss in clientele, nor the bad rep the bar got.
As for kicking the instigators out, that's cute. A group of GIs is not easy to kick out, especially when they tend to look down on the place they are posted in.
Seriously, it is sadly not as simple as you portray it. I for one can understand a bar owner having a "No GI" policy in Korea.
I have seen similar policies in Japan and in Germany as well for establishments near US bases.
Oh and just by the way, G.I. s are not an ethnicity.
PS No offense meant to you NYCGal. |

I was talking about the no foreigner thing, but this thread has a lot of overlap.
We'll have to agree to disagree, I guess. Neither of us own bars, as far as I know, so we really have no experience except for what our bar-owning friends have told us. As for being allowed entry, I've never had a problem anywhere, but my guy friends have had some issues, and it pissed me off enough to leave, even when the "bouncers" tried to keep me from leaving*. I've even had them say that my friends could join me when I told them no, but we all left, because I don't give my custom to jackholes.
I agree that G.I.s can be intimidating, but one shouldn't open a bar near a base if they don't want that kind of clientele. On that note, if one doesn't want foreign customers, they shouldn't open a club in Itaewon. That's the main issue here. We've gotten off track.
Anyway, time for sleep. Enjoy your day, Patrick.
*Not physically, but they tried to persuade me to stay. |

Sorry I didn't read the thread and someone may have already mentioned this, but Korea has anti discrimination laws due to their ratification to accept the rulings of the Committe to End all Racial Discrimination (CERD) and Article 6 of the Korean Constitution.
Rather than complaining online you should first go to the Police station and try to file a complaint, in the unlikely event they won't do their job, then you should lodge a complaint directly to CERD.
Personally I am more concerned about my economic freedom being hampered due to discrimination rather than the freedom to visit a bad bar. |
