All good advice thanks. I'm just a hobbyist so I'm never going to go high end like PRS or Ernie Ball, but an American Standard Tele is as low as I want to go. I want something that I can potentially keep forever, but still have good resell value if I choose to upgrade or I can't ship it home.
I would love to go to Japan, but my budget just won't stretch that far, sadly.
I got a quote at Nakwon Arcade at 1.4 for the AM Tele. Not much more expensive than getting it shipped it seems. |

It really depends on which US Tele and which Japanese one you're looking at. There are so many models of each, you can't do a 1-to-1 comparison, but, to make a gross generalization, I'd say a CIJ (Crafted in Japan) Fender is of better quality than a comparatively priced USA made one.

Fender Teles are tried and trusted guitars. A custom job might be technically superior, but whe it comes to reselling, having the Fender logo is a bonus. |
I went to music shops in Osaka. Prices and selection was disappointing.
I did go to a shop that sells Navigator guitars. Damn, those were nice. But, at 450000yen, ouch.
Really, I'll say it again, I'd email PGK and set up an appointment. Super nice guys, and they do top notch work.
I wouldn't worry about resale value. If you've got a great guitar, odds are you won't sell it. |
I looked on their site and their guitars look great, but they don't have any prices. You have any idea how much they charge for a tele clone? |
Couple of year ago, I think it was 1.2. Don't know if it went up. Prices are probably negotiable. Send them an email to inquire. The owner isn't fully fluent in English, but he reads and writes it well enough. |

As low as you want to go? Teles are mighty fine instruments in the right hands.

I know how great teles are. I should rephrase. I mean that a standard is the minimum, not a Highway One, Special or Squire. I should post something in the BST forum. |

That's what's turned me off of American Fenders. They've got too many different variations now. That's why I went with a CIJ Fender. Got what is the equivalent of an American Standard for less than what I would have paid for one even though it was shipped at my door from Japan and I had to fork over a 20% duty. |

I've just done this.
Bought a Stratocaster from the US and including shipping, insurance and VAT, it came in around 400 000KRW less than Gmarket prices.
If it is a US made instrument, then because of the FTA, there are no extra duties, only VAT at 10%.
This is 10% of the total (inc shipping+ins) invoice price.
I had a korean help me, they called customs and got the paperwork emailed through.
Paid by bank transfer and it was released the same day.
Something worth noting; with tracking I knew it had arrived at customs. I waited 5 days, for a call, or letter until I eventually got a korean to call them with the tracking number. Initially (rather worryingly..) they 'couldnt find' the item, then called back 30 mins later having found it, and got the ball rolling with the paperwork.
In future I'll be calling as soon as I see it has arrived. Not counting the 5 days sat at customs, it took 3 days from Nevada to Ulsan |

If it's over 1000USD value your meant to use an import agency. I didnt, and they charged an extra 33000 won handling fee |
