It would seem that the Canadian short track speed skating team was the victim of sabotage by the Americans at the 2011 World Team Short Track speed skating thingy.

I read the article today in the Toronto Star. The strange thing is, the Americans didn't even make it into the final - they weren't competing against Canada. They were already out of it. In fact, the Toronto Star article had this to say:

The Canadian relay team was a medal favourite at the 2011 event, but with Jean unable to compete, Canada finished third. The Americans, though, didnt even qualify for the final. When asked why a team might sabotage another when they werent even going to face each other, Phil Legault, director of communications for Speed Skating Canada, said he didnt know, but added that Canada and the U.S. shared a dressing room during the competition.

Pretty weird, huh?

Now, I am not an investigative journalist by trade, but why don't you guys read the story, and then look up the results of the event and tell me what YOU think.

Isn't the US coach Korean, or of Korean descent? I know that Cho, the team member who actually tampered with the Canadian's skates was born in Korea. Hmmm....who came in first at the 2011 Championships? Oh ya, Korea. Well don't that beat all.

I figure you jest with the best intentions, but I'm bored at work with too much time on my hands, so.......

The Canadian skater whose skates were tampered with hardly seems to care. He said it was all in the past and not worth focusing on.

I'd have a hard time disagreeing with your statement in most instances that involve both the US and Canada. This time however I'm quite impressed by the fact that Canucks aren't chimming in to bad mouth the Yanks.

But let's be fair. If a competitor tampered with Ohno's, or some other American's skates, don't you think it would be a big story? I'm not sure there would be enough cheese to go with the whine.

Except, it wasn't really the US that tampered with the Canadian's skates.. And we all know what would happen if a Korean's skates got tampered with.

Yeah, like he doesn't care. A professional athlete, all be it in a non-sport, doesn't care if another athlete messes his performance up?

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2012/09/20/sp-speedskating-olivier-jean-skates-sabotage.html

"Jean told Radio-Canada that he found the allegations "funny" and indicated he was largely unbothered by the result of the race in question.

"You can't change the past," he said. "I can't waste energy on something that happened two years ago."

Pretty good sport for someone who dedicates his life to his event. Regardless of how irrelevant the sport seems to some of us.

You know what a link is, right?

Here's the short form:

The Korean coach of the US team ordered a Korean-born member of the US team to sabotage the Canadian's skates. The Korean-born US team member obliged his coach.

The US was not in the final vs. Canada. South Korea was. South Korea won.

The Skate Canada official says, with a straight face I would assume, that he doesn't know why the US wold sabotage Canada when they were not even competing in the event. Really? I think *I* might have an idea why they did it...

And on an unrelated note....does anyone else think short-track would be better if they allowed contact?
